the beauty of Mobile shell is you can switch back and forth easily.
when on the stock today screen you can press the "spb home" and it reverts to mobile shell and on mobile shell you can set a shortcut to press and it reverts to stock today screen. thats why I recomended the mobile shell first vs a custom rom

I know what MobileShell is, my point is since he has never used a device like this, getting the experience completely stock first would be a good thing. Meaning not installing a bunch of programs, one of which would be MobileShell. He asked for opinions, that was mine.

1) activate it

2) use it for a day or two and figure out how it works, ask questions and search here for things you want to do or to inquire about something.

3) When you are comfortable with the phone, if you decide you want to roll with windows 6.5 (and I would strongly suggest you do) then we will get you to unlock the phone and flash a ROM.

4) You will soon see what you like/don't like about certain ROMs, and then you want to download a kitchen, which is not hard to work with to add things/ customize how you want your own custom ROM to be.

It is not hard to learn if you do it in the right gradient, it will all come to you. I know exactly how you feel because I recently got an android phone and I was trying to root (unlock the file system access) and flash android 2.1 on my phone which is a lot more complicated than winmo. You will get it :)

I think I'm likely to take yours and Carla's suggestion and at least check out the existing set up and see what it's like first.
But I'm not sure what you're saying:
"if you decide you want to roll with windows 6.5 (and I would strongly suggest you do)"
Is 6.5 what will be on the phone or will that be an upgrade?

I know it's got a trial period and I'm likely to try it before I buy it but I'm wondering if there's better options out there for me.
I'm wanting things simple. I don't care for animations on a phone or even complicated wallpapers and the like. I want it to be nice looking but function is primary.

I am thinking 6.1 is what will come on your device, I don't have nor have I ever had an Omnia, but I am sure that is the case. 6.5 is just a bit nicer, more finger friendly, cleaner IMO then 6.1, but of course there are those that love 6.1.

That's what I think I've read, 6.1.

One more thing to research......

i was the same way before I got mine but once in hand it made a lot more sense. btw after page 3 or 4 its really not much help to a newb
Carla in my initial post i suggested a PIM backup first. I was assuming it would take a few hours of acclimation to be able to add PIM backup and mobile shell. for me it was a few days before I was even able to comfortably add the mobileshell via the stock rom. heck it was 2 days before i knew enough to update the stock rom to cf03.
didnt mean to ruffle any feathers

OK, I got my Omnia yesterday and learned my way around it a little and now I'm awaiting number porting from Straight Talk to activate it. I do hope the reports are true and that some shell, skin or rom (I'm unclear on the differences) will make it more intuitive!

That said, I'm following the recs here and was going to update to wm6.5 and add some sort of backup... I can't figure out how to update to 6.5. Windows mobile website doesn't list the original Omnia as update-able to 6.5.
Are you all saying that what wm doesn't do can be done via custom (hacked) roms? Are they bug free?

6.5 is done only on custom roms, theres no official ms 6.5 update for Omnia.

go to Modaco.com the Omnia section. theres tons of roms, along with known issues with said roms.

its not hard to do but can be very intimidating.

btw theres lots of freeware there too.
any upgrade will be more intuitive than the factory rom because you set it up your way not Verizon/Samsungs definition of intuitive

Re: Noob needing some direction...

Well I've been to Modaco.com and I can't make anything out of it! I went to downloads and searched for files by lyorite and all that came up was two posts relating to IM apps. I dont even IM.

My phone was just activated 15 mins ago. I was going to download the trial of spb shell but I'm not sure how to go about doing that without incurring a big data charge. Can you tell me how to shut down the data connection so I'm sure I'm only using the wifi connection? (which I think I would not be charged for, right) In fact is there a setting to make it such that as long as I can get a wifi connection the data connection will not be used? I've spent hrs with this phone today and haven't figured that out yet...
