First I'd like for you to check your phone to ensure you've rooted it, go to MENU>SETTINGS>ABOUT PHONE scroll down and look for BUILD NUMBER make sure it's the kernel you installed

Secondly, what is the kernel you used? If you didn't use Zefie's I believe you'll have to install Recovery2.0 in order to back your data

I'll need to add that to the HOW TO

I'm going to attach the Recovery2.0 to the how to

The way you install this is simply remove the customer kernel from the BINARY folder and copy the Recovery2.0 to the BINARY folder

Thanks! I'm using speedrabbit 1.7 and I though it was included.. added Recovery2.0 thank you

If you guys are looking to save for some more space, this zip will de-odex the system but it includes all the original apks, so you will need to remove them again or just remove them from the zip before flashing it with Recovery 2.0. Also this file is needed before you flash any theme,

cl14_theme_template

Re: [HOW TO] Gain Permanent Root on CL14 Out-The-Box and Backup/Restore Customization

Hello all, new to forums.
First I wanna thankyou for the tutorial, it's easier to understand than the others I've seen.
I have a Samsung Moment w/cl14 from sprint store. I am trying to root via the tutorial.
This is what I have done:

1: downloaded and installed samsung updater
2: downloaded zefie 14 kernal (that's the one I am going to use for now)
3: backed up the sm900 kernal to sm900name.tar.bak and moved it out of the binary folder
4: renamed the zefie kernal to the sm900name.tar
5: copied it to the binary folder so it was the only file there
6: ran the sprint updater file wich went as follows screen for screen
A: the warning screens ie: this will erase data
B: take out the battery and put back in
C: hold vol down+camera+end until the download screen come on
D: plug the usb cable in
At this point it goes a split second and says drivers have been installed and just reloops itself.
I did this about 10 times, uninstalling drivers, installing drivers and the same with the samsung updater, and only got install software screen one time. At that screen I hit start software install and it sat at [debug] connecting or somthing like that in the lower left corner and just sat. No progress bar or anything. I let it set for about 10 mins and still no progress was showing.
So all that said, am I doing somthing wrong or missing a step or somthing? Will that method on that link not work?
I have uninstalled and installed the drivers and software multiple times, along with rebooting.

Sadly I don't have a pc so this is a sort of hard process for me, as I am useing a friends pc, and don't always have acess to it. I have acess to a pc at a colledge I attended but they have a proxy/nat wich blocks the d/l of the kernel file.
The steps seem easy enough to understand and do, but maybe I am just overlooking somthing. Could also be some firewall issue on friends pc, not sure......just need to make sure I am doing the steps correctly before proceeding.

Update: I got to the software screen again, and it's stuck at [DEBUG] SetupConnection in the lower left corner. It doesn't go past that at all. It is set as Com3, says Com3 Connected in the right lower corner.
When it gets to the window, after a few mins it says Ready..., and just sits there
Any ideas?

As much headaches as this is seeming to be I am seriously thinking about just dropping srpint, and going with the tmobile hd phone. I know it's windows mobile, but this samsung has been a thorn in my side since day one. Gps didn'T work, fought with sprint for 3-4 months and they finally sent me a new one and the gps now work correctly. Two weeks into this new one the inside ear peice goes bad, they repair it and it works now.
I am trying to root now, with no luck, seems that everytime I turn around this phone has a vendetta or somthing against me :(.

Well for whatever reason. I finally got it rooted. It says Zefie 1.4. WOOTAGE.

I'de still like to know what the hangup was, so if anyone has ideas, let me know.

I had a similar problem. When I got to step D where the driver was installed, I hit the Back button in the update utility to the part were it asks you to pull out the battery and followed all the steps again and it worked. So if anyone else has this problem just redo the steps after it installs the driver and it should work.

Yeah I figured out how to get past mine. For me I went thru the process 2 times, the second time after the connect usb screen, hit next, and I get the software screen. I have been messing with it some, and have done this twice, the exact same result. I installed zefie 14.3, then put on the stock sprint cl14 I saved, and am now arranging my desktop and installing apps. Just a suggestion, put backup in that tutorial, "before" the root process......that way people won't have to install the desktop stuff again like I am lol. not a biggy I have MyBackupPro, so it goes fast enough, just gotta re-setup my home screens is all. I would have backed up first had I known about the backup process first. I am now setting up my home screens and then I will back it up and save it.

I have the backup process as part of Recovery v2.0, that's why it's after the root process... can't backup using recovery if it's not installed on the phone

I hope I understood your suggestion correctly

Lol, yeah makes perfect sense. Sorry bout that I never even thought about that. Must still be root mezmorized or somthing :-).
Thanks again for all the tutorials and help. I am officially a rooting maniac lol
I did have a couple of questions

1: if I saved an image via vol down+phone+power and it was on sprints cl14 rom, does it save as that? And if I restore it for whatever reason does it take root off and put it back to cl14 sprint? And vice versa, save as rooted to an image, does it save as root.
I am thinking yes, so that would mean I could setup my home screens and install apps, and if anything happened I just restore that image and I'm back where I started before it messed up.
Am I correct in this?
2: I've heard about apps2sd but never used it. Is it a must for this phone? I have 139mb left on internal mem

You're welcome, I am not sure about either one of your questions, I didn't backup CL14 or nor do I have APPS2SD installed... perhaps someone else does
