Why do I need a lock screen??? Am I missing something?

I've been using this phone for a bout a week now. I can't figure out why I need a lock screen. It seems like an extra step. The only thing that wakes up the phones display is the power button, a phone call (which has it's own swipe to answer thing), an alarm or probably some special non-native apps. So about 100 times a day I'm hitting the power button and then swiping my finger.

Does anyone else think this is redundant? Is there a native way to get rid of the lock screen or do I have to download an app?
