Text Messages On Lockscreen?

I've got the "connect the dots" pattern passcode thing set on my lockscreen. When I get a text message, all that happens is the phone makes the audible notification. The screen doesn't turn on. When I turn on the screen, I can sometimes catch the message scrolling up on the notification bar at the top, but other than that, there's no way to see the message on the lockscreen. So I have to enter my pattern to unlock it, and then either go into notifications or into messages to see the message.

What I would like to have happen when a text comes in is have the screen turn on and display the message on the lockscreen somewhere, so I can at least know if the message is something I should respond to or if it's something that can wait.

Is there anyway to change this up? Do I have to install a new lockscreen?
