yeah, the sound of the screen, it annoys the hell out of me too.

There are those Deer and animal repellants that use a high frequency sound, somewhere between 16 and 17 Khz, that always distract me when im driving.

One night i followed the sound onto someone's property, and when i got within 3 feet of the speaker i had to cover my ears. My partner, who's almost 50 (im 27), looked at me like i was crazy. I had to spend the rest of the shift explaining the degenerative properties of the human auditory system with age.

..... He didn't like to hear that he was getting old.

here is another link, gives you a full range to see which ones you can hear. I'll tell you, I use it because most people can't hear it and I can't stand hearing other peoples ring in the office!!

One interesting thing I noticed is that when the wav file is compressed to a wma file, the tone disappears. I remember reading that mp3s lost some of the high frequencies. Looks like wma loses them also/more.

I'm trying to make the files for the higher frequency tones longer... but when I import them to my wave editor, they flatline (on the scope). Anyone make these usable ringtones by making them over 10 seconds long?

OK hee's the geeky bit -

Yeah, most people lose the ability to hear high freq as they age - but there is a lot more to it ...

Sorry to say if you can't hear it when the ad plays on TV, but can hear the ringer, then your TV probably has an amp that just doesn't respond to higher freqs, or speakers that can't reproduce them. I work in live sound, and even though we know that most people abosolutely can't tell, you still try to get the 20 Hz to 20 KHz response out of your system, because somehow it just sounds "better"!

There are a lot of moderating factors - as for compressing/converting - it is certainly possible that you can lose high end - tho I have found that MP3s tend to sound a bit "peaky" (too much high end) , something that you either get used to or you EQ out.....

Anyway, had to put in my 2 cents (pennies - I'm English) worth
