Can anyone help me make a logo transparent?

I'm trying to make two logos for my phone but I'm not a photoshop user by any means. Ideally I'd like a basic espn logo like this :

and a logo for a forum I visit like this: . My problem is I want them to be transparent. I have no idea how to add transparency to a logo. Also - if anyone has a ready made PPCgeeks or XDA logo that you can shoot me a link to I would appreciate it, I have substitutes that I am using for now but if theres some that are already made then that works too

If either someone can help me by making these two transparent (if its simple), or give me some help on actually how to do it I will love you forever, thanks in advance!

Hmm when I tried to use them they came out all blue and weird looking on my touch pro. Is it because I resaved them as a png? I'm using them as logos on a page in wm6.5, can I use them as gifs?

Hey there whenever you would like to use an image as a logo it must be saved as a .png ....

I haven't fount a good way to save a transparent png without photoshop. Theoretically, changing the extention should work but yeah, you want to use a png.

Just out of curiosity, why do you always feel the need to center your posts and make them a different size? Makes them so annoying to read

Thanks for the tips, but I still don't have a way to make it transparent on my own Can anyone help me make them transparent and save them as a .png? If there is a program I can use on my own that is free let me know and I can try to do it.

Thanks for helping, they aren't 100% and still have some discoloration but they are usable I'll have to see if I can use the editor mentioned above to fix them up a little bit more.
