droid or htc touchpro 2

finally getting ready to bite the bullet and buy a new phone (w/data plan) trying to decide between

1. Droid
2. HTC Touch Pro2

I have been a big winmo user since my audiovox smt5600 many years ago and I am kinda fearful of swapping to android.

Re: droid or htc touchpro 2

I've been having the same issue. I got a Touch Pro 2 through an insurance claim, so I won't really be out that much if I went to a Droid. Many have said they like it from the early hands on reviews, but something is still in the back of my mind telling me to wait. If I do wind up purchasing the Moto Droid, I won't be using my NE2, I'll pay for it outright.

The idea that the HD2 could/should be coming to Verizon as the Passion I believe and then reading a report that it could also be a Droid device makes me want to hold off. I'd much rather have a HTC device than Motorola. The physical keyboard on the Droid is really claustrophobic (it looks worse than my original Touch Pro), so that would almost force me to use the on screen keyboard, and if that is going to be the case, I might as well get a really thin device like HD2/Passion.

I love being an early adopter of new technology, but this time around I may just sit the Moto Droid out. Then the fact that you can only install applications to the ROM of Droid 2.0 devices without ROOT makes me extremely unhappy and borderline cry out false advertising; but should Google change that and allow the installation of applications to the SD card, I'll jump ship immediately and give the Moto Droid a run for her money.

My Touch Pro 2 has been flawless so far from Verizon, and now that I've loaded Mighty Rom and have WinMo 6.5 loaded, she's a screaming device.

Isror - thanks for the input... fwiw the latest buzz on the htc hd2 is that it will not be an android phone on vzw but instead likely be winmo - which almost makes me want it more just cause I am familiar with winmo.

Yeah, I saw that report, but then saw this report as well researching last night.

Verizon to get HD2 as Passion+ Droid OS?

Re: droid or htc touchpro 2

Yeah lots of buzz about Android right now and no certainty if it will continue to pick up steam. I will be suprised if it doesn't, but I certainly don't blame anyone for having doubts...

I am also going to try the Droid, even after a long history with WinMo, and I share the queasy sentiments. At least I have a business account and my rep will probably let me handle both devices and maybe even demo them for a week or two each before I make my decision. Bleh. Tough call. Here is what puts me over the line for the Droid:

* Potential for Innovation with Android vs. the very slow dev cycle for WinMo. Plus I'm frankly just getting sick of windows mobile. It was not designed very well for phone use in my opinion. Still no repeating notifications for missed calls / txts?! What?!
* Better GPS capabilities - Turn by turn Voice Navigator for free. Very cool.
* Fast and click performance - Android appears to run very smoothly on the Droid.
* Good running app management - From what I understand, the Droid only allows 6 apps to run, and automatically closes background apps if resources get low, depending on settings.
* Better Construction - sounds like the Droid is built like a tank
* Included 16GB Storage
* Better Camera

My concerns:
* THE KEYBOARD! AHHH! The device is the slimmest with a hardware keyboard, but man ... Droid to TP2 is like night and day when it comes to the keyboard. Very big concern.
* Finding replacements for WinMo apps I have purchased. Bleh.
* No more mymobiler. Boo. I LOVE being able to type txt messages and control my phone from my PC while in the office. Very cool. Hopefully someone comes up for an android replacement.
* Appearance. This isn't real high on the list, but still notable. The TP2 is much sleeker looking IMO. But then again the Droid is more masculine. I wonder what my impression will be after seeing it in person. Samsung's i760 was ugly in pictures, but I liked the look once I got my hands on it.

I hope someone does a good side-by-side comparison soon. That would be really helpful for those of us who are almost having buyers remorse before even making the decision. : )

BTW, I just made the jump to Windows 7 from Vista and have been very happy. Maybe that is making this decision a little easier for me also.

No yeah, I know this one is older than the one from HTC's CEO or w/e his position is, but I thought he said under the HD2 name there wouldn't be a Droid, but nothing about re-branding under another model name as a droid.W/e who knows, I honestly want the HD2 as a WinMo phone and hope it'll come with a upgrade to WinMo 7 seeing some of the early screen shots it looks really finger friendly.

I will admit -- the keyboard on my Moto Droid took a little getting used to.. but for the 2.0 OS and the faster processor I'm ok with that for now. I did like how the Eris (HTC) version has 7 desktop panels rather than 3. But after playing with the trackball on the HTC Eris it seems like it might have a higher fail rate similar to the Black Berry devices.

The slider is a new design with like a new roller ball type idea.. very sturdy feeling over the wobbley TP2.

MyMobiler - love this Windows Mobile app! But who knows!! With all the new Droid phones hitting the market on Friday we might see something in the works soon similar.

The Moto Droid also basicly hibernates apps in the background. So if you go back or use the home button it just leaves a mirror image open using very little system memory. Saving battery life and taking the lag factor out of the device.

The camera is as good as my Omnia with a boost on the video side. The 720P video recording is totally eyecandy amazing. I do like how with 2 button clicks you can share the video you recorded straight to Youtube.

Last thing -- Google Maps Turn-by-Turn nav.. its beta, but its working. Best of all its FREE! .. does better than most GPS systems out there to date due to having satellite and street picture view.

Re: droid or htc touchpro 2

Between the two my marks are still a little more favorable towards the Droid... Hopefully by February all my worries will be gone or at least have something exciting to look forward to.

Re: droid or htc touchpro 2

I hear the referral of the Droid having 2 gpu.

Does that mean that you can be on a phone call and surf the web or receive emails at the sametime?

If so that is a huge differentiator!
