Switching from LG VX9900 to HTC Touch Pro Verizon

Hey guys,
I spent the last 2 afternoons and nights reading up on the Verizon HTC Touch Pro. It seems like an all around nice phone. Well, besides from needing some serious speed up hacking right out of the box .

The TP would be my first smart phone. I purchased my enV back in December 2006. It's had a long life and has been heavily used for pics/vids (mms) and text (sms) messages. I want something new after 2 years. I also decided I wanted the option to have apps on my phone such as aim, facebook, and a mobile browser. Thus I decided on the HTC Touch Pro.

I have read almost every internet review about the TP, not to mention viewing every video review as well. I saw that FriendMobilizer seems to be my facebook solution. Aim has a 1.1 Beta 3 version of the aim client out so I found my aim solution there. And lastly Opera seems to be my best browser option. I also read that if I update the browser from the version on the phone itself, I can speed things up a bit.

Hopefully someone who has switched from a phone to a smartphone, as I plan to do, can help me out. I have figured out pretty much all I need to know except the following:

1) The enV has the ability to send 30 second video messages. I went to the verizon store and took a 17 second video of my friend. I was unable to send this video as mms (video message) because it exceeding something near 500k? Does this mean I am limited to 15 or less seconds to send videos ? Or is there some way to adjust settings to reduce resolution or size? My friends and family members do not have smart phones so I need to have the ability to exchange videos and pictures with them.

2) On my enV I have the ability to send a text message to 10 people at once. This seems to be a standard feature on many Verizon phones today. However, is this possible to do so on the TP?

3) If I am text messaging a Verizon phone, I can go into the "sent" folder and see whether or not the message has sent thanks to either a check mark or arrow pointing icon next to the message. Also, under "message info" you can find the status of the message. Is this information available in the sent folder of the TP?

4) I have always used Bitpim to transfer contacts to and from cell phones. However I feel this method will not work on the TP. I have 300+ contacts containing cell phone numbers, email addresses, notes, and home numbers on my enV. So manually entering then into the TP is not really an option . How can I get my contacts from my enV to the HTC Touch Pro? I know that the Verizon Store has a machine to transfer contacts. Does this work for smartphones? Also, I read that I need to hard reset the phone when I get it home to speed things up. That would probably erase my contacts. What is my best option?

I just want to say thanks in advance. I love my LG VX9900 but it's time to move on. I want to make sure the transition will be smooth from my 2 year old phone, to a new Verizon smartphone. I would be greatly appreciative if someone could answer my 4 questions . If all works well, I might be using a smart phone as soon as tonight

Yea, it works fine but they charge $10 for it........(even when you're buying a new phone from them)

i came from an env to a verizon touch pro to a sprint touch pro, that thing was slow unlocked and on stock rom.

1. i have not tried, but you can change the recording resolution
2. yes, just keep adding them
3. the phone has an annoying sent message that pops up that tells if it is sent, but smart phones have messages/notifications that pop up and tell you if there was an error, the error and asks to retry. otherwise it went through, in threading mode you as long as there is no error shown it went through, i assume in classic it is the same
4. simple. go to the verizon store ask them to update it when you buy it... go home load spb backup, only choose pim data (contacts, favorites, emails, etc) it will make an exe, copy that from the phone to the computer... now you have an exe that will also contain your information for however many uses you need, i suggest downloading contact changer 1.3 to change from last name, first name to first name lastname

i use number 4, and has worked everytime both spb backup and contact changer

Re: Switching from LG VX9900 to HTC Touch Pro Verizon

1) Does this mean I am limited to 15 or less seconds to send videos ?

MMS's have size limits

Or is there some way to adjust settings to reduce resolution or size?

Yes

2) On my enV I have the ability to send a text message to 10 people at once. This seems to be a standard feature on many Verizon phones today. However, is this possible to do so on the TP?

The "TO": section I believe can take more then one, did I ever try this, no.

3) If I am text messaging a Verizon phone, I can go into the "sent" folder and see whether or not the message has sent thanks to either a check mark or arrow pointing icon next to the message. Also, under "message info" you can find the status of the message. Is this information available in the sent folder of the TP?

If a text doesn't go you get a notification to resend or might goto draft folder of pocket outlook.

Try to see if you can get bitpim data to export to a format outlook can import, then via activesync you can get it from outlook contacts to TP

I know that the Verizon Store has a machine to transfer contacts. Does this work for smartphones?

Call store & ask, never knew this machine existed.

Also, I read that I need to hard reset the phone when I get it home to speed things up. That would probably erase my contacts. What is my best option?

Wait till a rom comes out that has the bugs worked out, others have disabled touchflo in the mean time.

Re: Switching from LG VX9900 to HTC Touch Pro Verizon

Thank you Creedin; That was very helpful!
I love my enV and was a bit hesitant to upgrade at first.
With all the information and help I've gotten online, I feel more comfortable now. Sounds like I wont lose any features when I retire my enV. Very glad to hear .

So you say you went from Verizon to Sprint? Did you change providers or did you port your Verizon service to a Sprint phone? Was that worth the haste? I heard the Verizon Touch Pro wasn't too bad with a few tweaks.

Where and when can this updated ROM be found? Also, who supplies these updates; Verizon, HTC, or Microsoft?
I know there is a update due out in early 2009 to unlock GPS. However I haven't heard much else. I hope they can speed up this phone soon. =D>

roms are mostly done by people. fixes and bugs can be done by htc and microsoft, and new system is done by microsoft. the gps is fixed by bored's fix its being constantly posted on in this forum so just look for it... it is also a rom

Re: Switching from LG VX9900 to HTC Touch Pro Verizon

Ohh. I think I got it now.
So hard spl is a program that allows custom ROMs to replace the existing Verizon ROM. A ROM is like the entire OS of the phone?
So if anyone can make their own custom ROMs, How do you know which is the best one? How do you know if that persons ROM is more stable than the stock Verizon ROM?

There is so much to learn.. My enV seems like a simple toy now .
