Sprint CFO: HTC EVO can take on iPhone 4 **Good Read**

http://news.cnet.com/8301-30686_3-20007314-266.html

I found this to be a really interesting read. Sprint's CFO sounds off about the EVO vs. iPhone 4. Also, the article quotes Sprint's CEO, Dan Hesse, as stating that the company has no plans to introduce a tiered data plan, such as the one AT&T is getting ready to screw their customers over with. I'm so glad the article stated that. I was wondering what Sprint was thinking in regards to that. Now, I love my EVO just a little bit more.

well instead of putting a cap on their data plans in favor of saving 5 bucks, Sprint went with charging an extra 10. That's why we don't have to worry about them going the tiered route... Sprint doesn't have a bunch of iPhone users clogging their network :)

Good article, but it wouldn't matter to me what anybody else thinks anyway. I'm fully aware of all the iPhone's shortcomings and wouldn't trade my Evo for an iPhone under any circumstances. IMO the Evo kicks the iPhone's ass around the block and back. I don't like anything Apple makes. My MP3 player of choice is a Microsoft Zune 120 GB, and it has so many more features than an iPod.

I'm sure some people will flock to the iPhone when it gets released, but that's their perogative. Enjoy mediocrity along with the rest of the sheep, and have fun drinking the water.

getting ready? they went into effect on monday

also the Evo destroys the iPhone 4, the only specs the iPhone has on the evo is screen resolution (who cares, the evo looks pretty damn good) and the iphone 4 is like 3 mm thinner, who gives a rat's?

also, where does apple get off introducing "video calling" as something brand new never been done before and you have to be on a wifi connection to do it. i liked engadget's comment on their liveblog during steve's keynote, "hey rest of the world, how do you feel about steve finally catching up?"

Oh, wow! I didn't know those asinine AT&T plans already took effect. Too funny! And I agree with all of your points about the Evo. I have an iPod touch and I love it, but for the first time ever, I started not to like it so much when I compared it to the greatness that is ... EVO! :headbang:

What he said was, we wouldn't be charged extra for 4G and he didn't lie about that. The $10 charge according to Sprint is for the kickstand and large screen!

Let's face it, we are already on a tier plan except it only has 1 tier right now, and they are charging $10 for it. Luckily this tier gives us unlimited data.

Nice typo

The Andrdoid-based EVO is also designed specifically for a super fast 4G network, which means applications and video viewing is much faster than on an iPhone when the EVO is used in a 4G network.

You do realize that AT&T users with the iPhone have the tiered plan, AND must pay $30 a month as opposed to the $10 sprint fee. So we are waaay better off. And that's not even mentioning sprint's super cheap plan on top of it all. For the first time in my life, I can happily say : Sprint Wins, AT&T Fails

I think I read that they can only do video conferencing via a wifi connection, correct me if I am wrong? Still will be nice, EVO and i4 being some of the only phones with the capability.

Just because we may pay less than an average Iphone users on ATT, we are still getting screwed. We have to pay a extra $10 for a "richer data experience" while already having a unlimited data plan.

How I feel about everybody being all happy and chipper about it is Sprint will see this and take their inch and make it it into 10miles over time.

Here is something funny I find about the Iphone 4. One of the big marketing points they make is the steel band around the phone acts as an antenna. So is this Apple's implied way of admitting that the bad call quality of previous Iphones were cause of hardware issues? And it took them 3 revisions to fix that LOL.

yes that's what i said, to use video calling on the iphone 4 can only be used when connected to a wifi network, here's engadget:

more likely its them trying to fix att's network problem for them. since apple can't fix it themselves they had to do something because the iphone was getting a bad rap because of the network, i don't know about everywhere else but i get complaints from att customers using a lot of phone models, not just the iphone

No actually the iPhone hardware is superior to the EVO :(....the iphone has an extra sensor and a hummingbird processor (which is more powerful and 45m so it is smaller and more efficient) thus more battery life.

Whats holding Apple back is as always the software...the only spec EVO beats the iPhone is on the camera....

Its kinda sad but when is HTC gonna release a WOW phone and not stick to minimum upgrading >.>

On Monday's Attack of the Show, of course they spent 15 minutes talking Iphone 4 and 6 seconds to talk about the strong sales of the EVO. But anyways, a guy on that show who was at the announcement show did say that the camcorder on the Iphone4 has the quality to replace a Flip recorder. I'll admit that is impressive, I don't think our EVO has that quality. But anyways, it will come down to personal preference. In the end I don't see myself owning an Iphone for a very long time. Just can't stand apples company attitude.

I wasn't talking about the back camera..I meant the front camera on iphone being a crappy vga while EVO has a 1.3mp...the back camera for th EVO I hear is same tech as in the iphone..(at least thats what I read somewhere)

sorry, i forgot about the gyroscope

and as far as A4 vs. Snapdragon in terms of power they're about the same, however yes the A4 is more power efficient but at the same time apple really slimmed down the battery so the evo and iphone may in fact have the same battery life before recharging

regardless of "same tech" and both having 720p the evo still has an 8MP vs the i4's 5MP

well snapdragon i think is 65nm and 45nm on the iphone cpu..but A4 is similar to the hummingbird which has a 3x more powerful built in gpu...

well here's my research so far, i haven't read anything about an integrated gpu however the A4 does have 2 ddr ram chips on the chip so as to "support greater needs for graphics" the word support to me reads that it doesnt have an integrated gpu

both Snapdragon and the A4 are power by the same ARM Cortex A8 core but the A4 has had some "enhancements" (undisclosed, worked with samsung actually) which in theory make it perform better and both are manufactured at 45nm so their power consumption is likely similar

45 nanometer LP process variants, QSD8x50A clocked at up to 1.3GHz with 30% less power consumption, were sampled by the end of 2009
This is the 1.3ghz snapdragons..not the ones we currently have..the ones we have are 1ghz and 65nm

As for the A4 google up similarities of Hummingbird and the A4, then look up the details on the hummignbird's built in gpu processor

Apple A4 is based on the ARM processor architecture.[5] The first version released runs at 1 GHz and contains a Cortex-A8 CPU core paired with a PowerVR SGX 535 graphics processor (GPU)[2][6][7][8] built on Samsung's 45 nm process.[9]

I think these phones are so similar in specs that we will not see huge differences in performance between either device. Honestly, for me I like the hardware of the iPhone, but I like the Android software and thus the EVO is the winner for my daily use. Is the A4 processor a little better than the Snapdragon? Probably. But, does it matter that much? To me, no.

All depends on what your doing...for most users only noticeable difference will be battery life...but as far as power goes...the hummingbird is more on par with the 1.3ghz snapdragon rather then the current one we got.

If your gonna do video and gaming you will notice a significant difference in quality..I mean it even has DirectX 10.1 support....and should be able to support 1080p from what ppl are saying...

The difference is pretty big...but I doubt the iPhone will be able to make full use of it.

Well yeh they Apple is a jerk...but I'm even sure there will be jail broken alternatives...but as stated all this is software issues..and its kinda sad when a dumb phone like an iPhone has better specs then a feature phone thats suppose to be awesome :(

But I hear the Galaxy S is coming out this month too.. unfortunately on t-mobile :/

Well other then the Super AMOLED screen that has more colors, saves energy and works better in sunlight. There is the hummingbird processor. and DLNA. It also has 8gb/16gb built in + SD card...oh and Bluetooth 3.0..(Also N support but EVO may get that later)..oh it also does the dishes...well ok maybe not :/

Is that enough for you?

If not there is a Galaxy S Pro with a physical keyboard to sooth those extra Fancies
