Treo Pro Reviews

Let's not let this turn into a discussion about your experience ordering it or any problems with shipping, speculation of features, etc....this is purely a "review of the product".

Post up pics if you have them too!

Tell us the pros, cons, etc. And please remember to stay on topic!

Waiting for this too. I bought my father in law a Mogul and he came from a Treo (the last one they made running palm OS) and he is really having a hard time. He is not really gadgety. But he like when i get stuff and wants the samething as me. So since he came from a Treo, I think he would liek to go back to a Treo form factor even though its still runnng WM. Buthe will not buy another phone. I will have to get it for him. He wont change his plan even though he can get a cheapier one. Geesh.

Not my review (not yet, lol) but here is someone from SU who got one:

Pros:

1) Call Quality: MUCH better than 800w, both on Handset and Speakerphone. If anything, that alone is worth the price of admission. I thought the Treo 800w was inferior in call quality to my 700wx.

2) Screen: Higher brightness and or contrast than 800w... seems nicer and sharper. Not to mention its flush to the phone now and easy to hit all aspects of it. I also kinda like and am warming up to the fact they eliminated to the 2 hard menu buttons and just made them touch screen interactive.

3) 3.5 Audio plug: I can now use my phone at the gym and eliminate taking my entire Zune with me along with my phone if I don't want to.

4) Form Factor: While I didn't dislike the 800w, this is noticeably thinner and feels just as nice in the hand. Solidly built... feels slightly more solid than 800w.

5) Looks: I think its pretty much a universal thought that this is just a much nicer looking than the 800w... looks sleeker. To each their own here though.

Cons:

Keyboard: Admittedly, I like the raised hard buttons of the 800w, as it had better feedback... the Pro is gonna take some getting used to. Keyboard Backlight is also better on the 800w... Just been sending some texts and this could be a deal breaker... although not sure yet, but I wish they could have kept the keyboard the same from the 800w... or at least closer in design.

SMS Texting: Not liking what they did here... not as much fits in threaded text, and no smiley faces? http://img.sprintusers.com/images/smilies/smile.gif LOL... Like the 800w better in that Dept too.

Antenna: The signal on my 800w is far superior than the Pro in my room right now, but it might be that I need to call Sprint to program it better... plus I need to call to activate the internet too... haven't gotten on yet.

Features: This might be my own lack of time with the device, but where is the built in GPS on this thing? Not sure how to work it... most likely user error.

Fingerprints: This phone is not for people who can't bear to see finger prints all over their phone... they definitely show quite a bit on the glossy back part.

Conclusion: Ok so far... I'm actually debating going back to the 800w until the Pre comes out and see what that has to offer... I want to like this phone, but the Keyboard may kill it for me.

With that said, the Treo Pro is going back. Call me crazy, but after trying to use the phone at length last night, I still find my 800w more comfortable and easier to use. It's more of the old style Palm feel which I like.... I will wait for the Pre at this point (maybe the keyboard will be improved?) or for a WinMo 6.5 device. Right now, I'm happy with my 800w!

after using the treo pro for a day, im addicted to it. the new IE6 is nice, it has the ability to display most flash enabled web pages, and the browser also has a mouse, great for clicking links that r small. i havent gotten to mod it yet, so the RAM issue hasnt been a problem.

Re: Treo Pro Reviews

I am currently using the Palm Pro from Sprint, I was fortunate enough to be the advocade for this device. So far the Pro has an awesome phone, there is no need to download Skyfire or Opera because you get to change the option on the phone to view internet like you would on your desktop. The phone is very smooth and you can view flash videos via internet explorer. It has a lot of programs that are really cool on the phone, like Kinoma, Orb of course youtube. I use Orb a lot just because its a program that lets you access your media, photos and documents from your computer at home. Wifi is really good but no need to use it because Sprints data transfer is much better than using wifi. It does have the Sprite program which is good for backing up your info before making any changes to the phone itself. Easy to use and touchscreen has definately impoved from your typical Centros. If you have any questions about the Palm Pro feel free to ask me anything.

Re: Treo Pro Reviews

err, I have to disagree about the browser part as IE6 is pretty awful on the Sprint TP--not that it is Palm's fault, I'm blaming MS here

The problem of course is if people want to load Opera Mobile, they're gonna run out of RAM pretty quickly since it is unusually low for a 2009 WM device

Actually i have installed Skyfire on my Treo Pro and am very patial to it. I even have a direct seach bar on my today screen that lets me either search or enter an address in directly. ive never really liked opera all that much, but thats just my opinion. here are a couple screen shots of the browsers. In IE you get a mouse cursor which i thought was kool. the screenshot wouldnt capture it though. in skyfire you also get a mouse cursor (dunno if that is standard with the browser or if it is because of my phone). it does show in the screenshot though :thumbleft:

My only issue is it is too slippery. I wish the back was that rubberized type. Any one know of a good glove fit case for it.

Also, anyway to keep the green and red lights on at a dimmed level at all times?

Hey JayMike, stop by your local Sprint Store, they should have a case/holster combo pack made by Seidio. costs 29.99 and it gives the phone that rubberized look and feel you are looking for, and the case and holster work together so you dont have to choose between them.

It's the innocase :) Idk if sprint priced it at what they did on purpose but from the looks of it on seidioonline.com it's 29.95 per piece, and sprints selling it for 29.99 for both it works nice lol

Re: Treo Pro Reviews (Quick Review after 5 minutes)

I only had 5 minutes with the phone and so far I am fairly impressed. This does not have the beautiful VGA screen as the Diamond or TP, but it is good enough and I would gladly trade this screen for the perceived improvement in battery life. The hardware design is very sleek and stylish, it seems lightyears beyond the normal Palm designs (i.e. Centros and older Treos). Must be because HTC had a hand in designing this puppy. =D>

The things that impressed me most after only holding it for 5 minutes is the added software. This comes preloaded with FlashLite, that is right I watched YouTube and video from the San Francisco 49ers website directly through PIE. Skyfire was not needed for that. There is also a mouse pointer when using PIE. Really useful when clicking smaller links.

The MMS that is installed is our beloved Arcsoft MMS, works flawlessly with preloaded Sprint MMSC server information (I am hoping someone can soon rip it for the Diamond and TP). This is a big upgrade over the Verisign Picturemail crapp, sorry I meant app, that was preloaded in the Diamonds and TPs.

Lastly, one of the other things I noticed most was the simple yet effective Keyguard. Press Red or Power key to turn off screen and disable keys. Press Power or Red key and then press center key to enable keys and touchscreen. Very effective, hard to accidently press two keys in sequence while it is in your pocket but simple enough to quickly unlock when it is needed. Sometimes it is the simple things in life that make it great.

If you bought this phone or are planning to, from what I have seen after 5 minutes I think you will be very satisfied. It seems to have all of the things that we have come to know and love/hate from Windows Mobile. Along with these surprising preinstalled features. I will check back in after I have had more time with the phone. Mahalo!

Just FYI, the Treo Pro has the screen type (cant remember what it is called) that can be viewed outside in direct sunlight. Good news for us geeks that like to be outside :)

This is the seidio innocase with holster, usually $50 from seidio, $30 at the sprint store. Feels like a mistake, but it's the real deal. Works great!

"Just FYI, the Treo Pro has the screen type (cant remember what it is called) that can be viewed outside in direct sunlight. Good news for us geeks that like to be outside "

I've never really seen this before in a screen. The backlighting is a bit duller, but in direct sunlight, it looks really great. I shouldn't be looking at this stuff when I'm driving.

I got this after having a Touch Pro, and I think this one is a keeper.

UPDATE> there have been a few glitches with some programs, and I'm having to learn the nuances of the hardware and software tweaks. Also, finding a car charger was a bit of a challenge. But, overall, I'm so far -very- happy with this phone.

has anyone figured out what difference(s), if any, there are between the Best Buy "recalled" version and the "official" release version? has anyone ripped the "official" ROM yet? TIA....

well, i have a "recalled" version and have compared it to one of the "official" versions and have seen no difference in functions. the software version is different, but thats all ive seen so far. looks to me like both the delays were pointless.

Same here. I have the "old" version. What's the difference?

Lord Bricks 04-06-2009 08:13 PM

Re: Treo Pro Reviews

i think the difference has been narrowed down to a OS recompile which gives 1.04 2MB more of free memory.. not a big deal IMHO

Treo Pro One Week User Review

The Treo Pro is by far the best phone I have ever used. In this review I will compare to the various Palm or WM based smart phones.

User background: Mogul, Treo 755p, Diamond, Touch Pro -> Treo Pro (TP)

As a phone:
In terms of reception, comparing to the other Sprint phones (Treo 755p, Diamond, Touch Pro), Treo Pro is on par. I walked to specific locations at work where Touch Pro did or didn't get reception to test the Treo Pro. The end result is subjectively same.

The form factor of the TP is just perfect. It feels like a razor or other modern day slim phone in my pants pocket. It's a pleasure just to look at. It looks and feels well constructed in your hand.

The call quality on caller's side is exception. The TP sounds loud and clear at about half max volume. Even at max volume the head piece doesn't crackle. I did not test speaker phone as I don't use it that much. The phone pairing with my BlueAnt V1 also sounds terrific.

I cannot emphasize how much the front side keyboard with dialing digits makes the TP a better phone. I really missed it on after going from Treo 755p to Diamond and Touch Pro. It's really convenient to be able to press hard buttons to dial a number instead of bringing up a touch screen.

Battery life on the TP is much better than the Touch Pro. I can make about 2.5 hours of calls with bluetooth and still have about 30% battery at the end of the day. Data use is minimal.

Also after a call is connected, the screen dims and the touch screen is locked, only hard buttons on the phone can turn the phone off which unlocks the screen again or unlock the touch screen for use during the phone call. This feature can easily be implemented on any other WM phone, but no one has done it. The Touch Proeither completely turns the screen off or dims the screen but making it vulnerable to unintentional touches. I was really impressed with how much thought Palm placed into this device when constructing the phone functions.

As a PDA:
WM6.1 is snappiest on the TP comparing to all WM device I have used period.

Bluetooth, Wifi, and GPS work as described. No difference comparing to the Touch Pro.

Screen is obviously inferior to the Touch Pro, but the improvements in all other functions and features far outweighs this deficiency.

I personally much prefer the front side keyboard of the TP comparing to the Touch Pro's slide out keyboard. For some reason, the sliding out just annoys me at times. But that may vary based on user preference.

The camera is inferior to the Touch Pro, but I would never use either phone to take picture I want to keep. I mainly use phone cameras for photo ID which either phone is more than capable.

No flash on the TP as the Touch Pro's flash came in handy at times, when I needed a flash light. I almost never used the flash of the Touch Pro for photo capturing.

The 3.5 mm head phone jack hasn't been used yet. Maybe it'll be handy to use. I don't have much time to listen to music on the phone. This may benefit others with long commutes on subways.

Just a side note, when the screen is off clock and date are both displayed as monochrome LCD which is really useful as I use my phone to keep track of time. I don't have to turn on the screen to achieve that.

In conclusion:
I really can't speak more about how much I love the TP. I might just keep it even if the Palm Pre comes out. It's almost a perfect phone for me. I also have the 1.03 Ebay rumored "recalled TPs." So do be alarmed if you have one. I guess if it bricks and has no warranty, then you run into issues. I haven't bothered calling Palm to see if mine has warranty.

I hope this helps.

If I had to pick, I'd take the Pro.

Re: Treo Pro Reviews

I second this. I have had every HTC phones out, and I've even had the very first window phone with the sliding up/down keyboard. Although I can say that those phones have improved with each new phone. This treo pro is by far the best phone out yet. To me it's way better than the touch pro, and I still have it cus I use 2 phones. Before I would use the HTC series of phones to text and use for the internet. but the HTC phones always was always a bad talk phone, so I had to have another phone that I could use just for the purpose of talking on. But now, this treo pro does it all, and does it all much better than the HTC series phones.

I was even going to just use the treo pro for just 30 days and keep returning it until the palm pre came out.... and use the HTC for texting and the internet, and use the treo pre for a talking phone. but now I may get rid of the HTC series and replace it with the palm pre because the palm pre is suppose to be better than the Iphone... This is just my imput

that's pretty damn cheap for a new phone

Re: Treo Pro Reviews

Don't feel like doing a full review, but will do a quick comparrison to the touch pro.

Better than Touch Pro
Call quality, sound level
Speakerphone
visibility in direct sunlight
responsiveness(surprising since it has less than half the RAM)
size
Battery Life

Not as good

Screen
ability to customize (load ROMS)

Overall so far I would give the nod to the Treo for all of my needs, only thing it doesnt do is satisfy my desire to customize it.

Re: Treo Pro Reviews

I've had my Treo Pro since March 15th, but I really wish I'd gotten something different. .

Pros:
  • Size, feels great in the hand
  • Looks, chromy, shiny, compliments my Studio XPS 13 perfectly
  • Keyboard, I never thought I'd be able to type with 2 fingers after trying it on the iPhone and failing since I couldn't grip the phone comfortably, but it works wonderfully with this phone.
  • Battery life
Cons:
  • Random glitches, phone freezes for a bit when unlocking after wi-fi has been on, IE6 crashes 50% of the time I try to close it and the audio playback glitches way too much.
  • Build quality, this is my 2nd Treo Pro, first one the keys did not light up properly and the battery cover was very loose, 2nd one is better, but the chrome L in palm has fallen off the battery cover already.
  • Reception. Possibly the sensitivity is just set too low, as I have no trouble making calls, but it constantly switches back and forth between 1x and EV-DO at my house making it impossible to use data without wi-fi, I have an old Samsung A900 that never leaves EV-DO in the same spot.
  • Screen resolution and not so much that it's low, but I've found issues with some apps that are made for 320x240 or 640x480.
That being said, if the Touch Pro2 drops this month as rumored, I think I'll be leaving the Treo Pro. I feel as though I made a mistake of waiting for the Treo Pro, the multiple delays caused me to waste my money on a G1 in the meantime, all because I was tired of the iPhone I had. I should have just got the Touch Pro, upgraded to the Touch Pro2 and completely skipped the G1 and Treo, as I've found that form factor is actually what I like best.

The issue with not being able to use DATA seems like a defective phone, I live in a 1x area and it feels to me that data is actually faster than the touch Pro at home, when on the road i have no issues connecting to data in EVDO areas, and noticed that on my trips to San Diego I am receiving EVDO sooner than with the Touch Pro, even though there are no new towers. I would recommend taking the phone in to be looked at. Also, I have noticed that if you send a text you will see that the EV icon will go away for a bit while the text is sent, so that may be the issue with it switching back and forth.

rudefyet 06-23-2009 07:07 PM

Re: Treo Pro Reviews

It's possible, I never had the problem with the phone hanging for a few seconds when unlocking it after using wi-fi on the first one I had, that always bothered me.

Either way I live on the edge of the local EV-DO coverage, so I don't even get one bar of coverage, and it often switches between EV-DO, 1x, and 1x Verizon just turning around in my computer chair, data works but it often gets interrupted as the phone loses service. I should mention it only does this at my house, elsewhere it works fine, and I've seen speeds of 900k to 1mbit. Then again, I have this a900, which I thought had the worst service ever, my Mogul got much better reception, but now the Treo Pro makes the a900 look good.

If it is a defect then it doesn't make me want to waste my time with another HTC manufactured device, seeing as this would be the 2nd Treo Pro with issues I've been given.
