My wife had this issue 2 years ago with her Razr V3m..I called and complained that they sold me a phone that was not compatible with my unlimited text plan. I demanded they either gave me a new phone or change the plan. They added a free data pack to her line.

I think the problem lies with the older legacy plans. You must now have either a voice plan, a messaging plan, or an Data plan. No longer are the voice plans with add on's.
