How can i make an mp3 an alarm sound?

I cannot figure out how to make an mp3 an alarm sound. When you tap on the "bell" above the time in the alarms tab, you only get a few items to chose from. In the sounds folder, I have changed the sound for "reminders" to the mp3 i want to play for the alarm, but the alarm setting conflict with it. Help!
