Torch Mobile acquired by RIM: Is this the end of Iris Browser on Qtopia and WinMo?
Torch Mobile has been acquired by RIM, maker of BlackBerry devices. RIM has been making waves claiming it will develop devices in the future to have browsers on par with that of the iPhone. This sort of confirms the intent, but does it mean that RIM won't work to surpass the iPhone's browser instead of getting "on par" with it?

RIP Iris Browser for WM, RIM acquires Torch Mobile

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget....09rimtorch.jpg I think it's safe to say we won't see any further enhancements for Iris on WM. It's a shame too, I was using it more and more. |
Re: RIP Iris Browser for WM, RIM acquires Torch Mobile

Re: RIP Iris Browser for WM, RIM acquires Torch Mobile
Sad news, I guess we will never see version 1.2 they've been promising for awhile now. This is just a big slap in the face to all of us Windows Mobile users.
Now hopefully Dorthy (another webkit based browser) will start improving and take over where Iris left off. |
Re: RIP Iris Browser for WM, RIM acquires Torch Mobile
This is so sad, Iris was such a good browser!!

and sadly it was only a .1 release away from the 1.2 release, I wonder how close they were on 1.2 before they got bought out.

Re: RIP Iris Browser for WM, RIM acquires Torch Mobile
I think they dragged their feet on the 1.2 release cuz they were in talks with RIM. I LOVED Iris. I don't know how I'll browse now. (slight exaggeration)

Re: RIP Iris Browser for WM, RIM acquires Torch Mobile
why would rim purchasing Iris impact WM platforms? Can't the company build for both OSes? Just a thought...
as for the news itself I didn't use iris I preferred dorothy... |
Re: RIP Iris Browser for WM, RIM acquires Torch Mobile
I think RIM's thinking is that they finally better get a decent browser on their phones 'cause them people are starting to really want to use that intertubes thingy...
|
Re: RIP Iris Browser for WM, RIM acquires Torch Mobile
who would've thunk it!?
people like the intertubes!? |
Re: RIP Iris Browser for WM, RIM acquires Torch Mobile
yea this sucks Iris was SOO close to making my phone up to par with a real desktop browser....
|
Re: RIP Iris Browser for WM, RIM acquires Torch Mobile
I tried Iris but never really liked it, especially compared to Skyfire and Opera Mobile 9.7 with the Turbo Mode. At least BB will get a decent browser. Their stock one was as bad as the stock PalmOS web browser, both of which were way worse than PIE.
