Re: McAfee: Trojan targets Windows Mobile

Really I have to wonder if this is an attack or an operation.

This is a very advanced piece of malware given the platform hasn't seen anything remotely close to a virus, trojan .etc

Hell the silent uploading of apps is advanced in itself, it'd be nice is M$ "Windows Mobile update" worked like that or options to request software to auto update to newer versions. (i.e., Office Mobile -> Office Mobile 6.1)

All I'm saying is, its pretty damn advanced, esp for it to be the 1st out of the gate...

I feel bad if I was wrong about this but I think McAfee /other are aiming for security sales here.

Re: McAfee: Trojan targets Windows Mobile

instead of releasing mobile antivirus apps.. why not update their PC antivirus apps to scan and check for MOBILE viruses?? thats the last thing i need on my mobile phone is an always running antivirus app taking up my resources..

after all, its antivirus companies that release viruses.. to get more sales of their product.. but i'll leave that for another thread :/

Re: McAfee: Trojan targets Windows Mobile

Here in Japan I'm using an X01T (Toshiba G900) with WM6.
I use Symantec Mobile Antivirus and it doesn't have any effect on system speed at all that I can notice. Probably a sales gimick mostly but fear is always used to sell or make changes one way or the other.
You either risk it or you don't.

I've had this debate for years with my counterparts in the IT industry... whether mobile device AV software is really necessary. If you remember, there was a Symbian platform (used by many non-Windows phones) virus a few years ago (read here: http://www.mobiledia.com/news/27141.html) and it got folks to think a lot about this subject. In my current corporate environment we us BlackBerries and a BB Enterprise Server setup, this creates a potential back door into the corporate email system if a mobile device becomes compromised. Microsoft is constantly building in more and more desktop-like functionality into it's mobile products (ie, Pocket Outlook, IE, Office, etc). So it's looking more and more like we have to secure mobile devices the same way we secure desktops, they have become viable endpoints for intrusion into networks.

So to answer your original question, here's one product for the mobile phone platform:

I can't endorse the product since I haven't had a chance to test it. But it's one of many products I'll probably start to evaluate as part of my job.

hmmmm I might have to give that a try
