battery meter and "x" to close windows

Seems simple enough but I can't find it. Is there a battery meter on the phone to tell exactly how much juice is left other than on the top bar?

Also,

Seems like you don't really close programs with this phone??? You just go back or hit the "home" button. Wouldn't this eat the battery with all those open programs?
