I've been using Handbrake with no issues. I have converted several avi videos that look really good.

Handbrake for me because it is free.

Coverted the videos with WinAVI video converter software. Getting the correct MP4 quality was a bit of a bear so that the videos don't lag on the phone. -- I will admit Coreplayer on my WM Touch Pro was a lot easier to deal with..

not talking about watching videos on the phone. talking about doing video out like the TP does. but thanks for the info. still debating on which to get. i have plenty of time before i upgrade. i hope HTC and VZN puts out a android phone that will do video out and has a real keyboard.
