Motorola says people like me should buy an HTC?

Just posted on the PPC Geeks news site: http://www.ppcgeeks.com/2010/03/04/m...buying-an-htc/

Basically all the Milestone customers have been pressuring Motorola to allow the phone to run on custom ROMs. Currently the milestone's bootloader won't run unsigned software so even if it's rooted, users can't install ROMs. Motorola responded by saying they will never unlock it and users who want to do this kind of thing should by an G1 or Nexus One (which allows users to load custom ROMs if they chose to void their warranty.)

This makes me even more resistant to allowing Motorola to install updates on my phone.

Glad I have a DROID right now! Seems odd they would lockout the Milestone but not the Droid, especially since Verizon is the carrier of the Droid.

Re: Motorola says people like me should buy an HTC?

I can understand why they would want thast but not say it like that. I disigree though with there decition. Most people dont use thes roms any way and i think they are making a big mistake in not alowing free testing( or so i think) of configerations on there phones that can benifit not only ther phones but future phones. Also giving an idea on what the consumer wants.

I have never understood this kind of stuff.

Since it voids the warranty it doesn't cost them anything.

It must help with development of the phone as people are constantly getting new stuff working and stable.

Re: Motorola says people like me should buy an HTC?

I would hope someone will hack it... but that may be a while as the Milestone user base is much smaller than the Winmo user base or the Droid user base.

I only bring up Winmo because their community managed a way to digitally sign ROMs. Also the Canadian version of the Milestone had the root exploit patched (thanks to cyanogen.)

Steve Kondik AKA Cyanogen - Once the exploit was found he submitted the fix a day later to the android open source project with a patch.

Here's the accepted change if you're looking for the exact details of what he did. I don't know exactly "how" he did it as I only lightly dabble in programming and even then mostly in .NET:
