Forcing mail to NOT use SMTP servers

So I have an account on a friends mail server. I know it's IMAP.

Both of our respective home ISPs do not allow you to run an SMTP server at home, nor do they allow outgoing traffic on port 25, so there was no need for my buddy to put SMTP on the server. At home, we use the SMTP server as supplied by the ISP, in my case, that's Comcast.

How can I force the mail application to just read mail and not bother with an SMTP connection for outgoing mail?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.0.1; en-us; Droid Build/ESD56) AppleWebKit/530.17 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/530.17)

Couple of options:

1. Set up a gmail account to pop your email and you can then configure it to send as your other email address.

2. Just configure the SMTP settings with bunk info and be sure never to send from that account.

Problem is that it tries to connect when you set up an email account.

You can configure the SMTP side with a throwaway gmail account... or even a gmail account you use regularly. It doesn't need to be on the same system as your POP account. Just make sure you send from another email account by default.

Username: emailaddress@gmail.com
Password: email account password
SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
Security type: SSL
Port: 465
