[XDAndroid] Gingerbread for Whitestone/Imagio Release 1 09/05/2012

Well, after about two months of work we're ready to release the first public pack of android for whitestone. I know you guys have waited a long time for this and it's probably too late for most by now, but here we are! And we have Gingerbread with a bleeding edge 3.3 kernel

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/38620067/WD1.7z

Quote:

How to use this:
  • You need an SD card. I recommend a clean one (Use HP USB storage format tool to wipe it good)
  • Place the entire contents of the pack into the root of the SD card. (That means the top directory)
  • Run "HARET.EXE" from windows mobile. You'll see flying text. Give it some time, first boot takes a while.
  • Enjoy!

This is a work in progress and as such you'll find that somethings are working and some are not.

What works:
  • Radio: Calls (Tested on CDMA only. Tell us if you have GSM)
  • Data.
  • SMS.
  • Androidy goodness in general.

What doesn't work (yet):
  • WiFi.
  • G-Sensor.
  • GPS.
  • Camera.
  • Media, windows and back keys.

That last item is interesting. Since not all the keys are working we've mapped them like this to make the phone usable:
  • VolUP = Menu key
  • VolDOWN = Back key
  • Power = power key.
  • Send = end key.

Known issues:

  • Data is not working?

You need to edit (from android) the file at "/init.cfg/init.gingerbread.rc". Find the line that says:

    Code:

    service pppd_gprs /system/bin/pppd /dev/smd1 defaultroute local usepeerdns \
and change it for this one:

    Code:

    service pppd_gprs /system/bin/pppd /dev/smd7 defaultroute local usepeerdns \
  • Phone doesn't wake up sometimes?

This is an unresolved issue. The first thing you need to do is deactivate "auto backlight" in both window mobile and android. It will work much better that way but you will still have trouble sometimes. If its not waking up then just suspend it again and wake it up once more until it does. Sometimes it gets stupid, be patient.

This will be annoying when you have incoming calls and you can't see the screen. Just blindly swipe the answer slider and it'll work. The phone is awake, just not showing anything on screen. Touchscreen and everything works though.

That's about it for now. Let me know how it goes.Enjoy!

Thanks to everyone on xdandroid and htc-linux for their undying and monumental support of our misguided efforts :D

Do you have a custom ROM?

During testing we had some issues loading the kernel from custom ROMs. Try flashing stock and then using this.

Looks cool. I could not get to the on-screen keyboard to enter any kind of text, such as for setting up a Google account - is that a known issue? I could see in the startup messages "Vogue" - would this work on my old XV6900? I have messed with an old Android set up for that, but it did have good deal more functionality for that phone.

Hang in there - this is more progress than we have seen in a couple years, and would like to see it succeed.

TIA,
R

Glad to see progress here. I do love running two operating systems on my TP2. Let us know if you need anything to assist your efforts here.

I tried to install two custom ROM (MD1 and MD2), as before, a window appears "Loading Linux" and nothing more... Problem is not a ROM

Sorry for my E

Sorry for my E

Stock, you need stock ROM. There's something that the custom roms are doing wrong that messes up the boot process. Flash back to the normal factory ROM and tell me how that goes.

If it STILL isn't working we might need some logs from you. (I was hoping this wouldn't happen but there may be more than one variation of the hardware)

I got this running on a custom ROM, the Energy ROM I've been using for almost a year.

the language barrier =) Sorry! I made a mistake and wanted to say "I tried to install two stock ROM (MD1 and MD2), as before, a window appears" Loading Linux "and nothing more ... Problem is not a ROM" =)
MD1 (http :/ / Personal Communications Devices | Our Devices - XV6975) is the stock Verizon ROM and MD2 is updated stock ROM.

what program you can get the logs? to throw them to you

Are you sure you have all the files from the WD 1 folder in the root of your SD card?

have all files, even downloaded again WD1, thought the problem may be in the archive. will be free time, I'll try to come up with something. It is unlikely that HTC released two different configurations Imagio, the problem is likely in something else.
Sorry for my E

The way I do it is using ADB. There's a lot of guides about it in this and other forums.

Once you're in adb you can open up a shell to the phone and pull the files I mentioned. Edit them in your PC and push them back to the phone.

I wanted to test if everyone was getting that issue. I see that you are so I'll fix it by default in the next release. (Don't know when that might be though)

Oh, we also got the GPU working these days so we have 3D accel now :!:

The GPU is quite old so don't expect to play the latest games but its something! It will be in the next release. (I'll release once we get the keys working)

It's surprising how usable it is already with the minimal keys available. I didn't know how easy it'd be to get by without home and search buttons until I had to navigate Android without them.

Yes, but it can be a cheap SD card. I had it running fine on an old 2 gb SD card I had laying around.

Yeah, I've been using it as a dedicated android phone for a few weeks now. It does the job

By the way, thanks for backing me up with some of the questions. :thumbright:

What's your first language?

Download HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool and do a SLOW format of your SD card. Make it a FAT filesystem and don't touch the other settings. It will take a while.

Then try out the ROM again.

It's kind of weird because if you're doing all the steps it should be working... unless your ROM is doing something weird. Reflashing to another ROM MIGHT help (it helped one of the first testers who couldn't get it running on EnergyROM). But remember that there *are* risks when flashing ROMs and you should be mindful of them. :study:

im having the same problem actually, i have all the files themselves in the root directory in a brand new sd card reformatted with windows 7 in quick format or the long format. It just freezes in the loading linux screen, normally at the end.

I have tried both stock roms, about to try doing it ontop of energy.

My native language is Russian
I tried to reflash Stock SPL, and then install Hard-SPL. Tried Energy ROM and a few other ROM with the same result "Loading Linux" and nothing more. Previous development of android is loaded without any problems. The kernel itself is not loaded, I tried to replace the zImage kernel from other similar projects edited startup.txt and the boot process went. Of course Android is not loaded properly, but now it is clear that the problem is in the kernel. However it is unclear in what way. Do not know why this happens, the same Imagio, and why my Imagio not boot, I do not understand ](*,)

Sorry for my E

How do you get CDMA data to work? I can't seem to. I edited the init.gingerbread.rc file with RE(Root Explorer), rebooted and didn't work. Any suggestions?

Edit: Nevermind, I got it working now. added a few lines to the STARTUP.txt files and edited the EPST settings on WinMo.
