Way to remove 160 char. limit on texts?

After reading this post: http://www.fuzemobility.com/removing...rd-lag-part-2/ on removing the keyboard lag while typing, I thought about the 160 char. limit on texts.

On my old verizon wireless phones, I could send up to 1000 characters as one text. On my Vogue, it sends anything above 160 characters as another text. Also, when I receive texts larger than 160 characters, I get them as multiple texts. Is there a file or reg. setting I can edit to change this?

I don't recall the name of the file, but I believe there is a cab that deals with this... try searching sms 160 or something like that... hope it helps...

Re: Way to remove 160 char. limit on texts?

I can't seem to find anything other than people complaining, or others explaining that 160 characters is the limit on every carrier... which definitely isn't true...

From something I read, a guy said that a verizon tech said it's a problem with windows mobile, and won't change until MS does something about it.

well in the TP section there's some thread about sms lag,
that will remove the counting on the text message,
like every character you put in it won't count,
but it still will only send 160character texts.

And that's strange, never heard anything above 160 as from my knowledge that seemed to be the normal cuttoff with multiple companies, other than a couple carriers with 140 that is.

That sms160 cab just changes the character limit to 160 characters as some roms made for those carriers with 140 character limits, or some generic carrier roms have 140 as the default character limit also.

I could have sworn it was the carrier's servers that limited it to 160 as they end up splitting up the texts as needed, not your phone.
But I very well could be wrong, as that is just what I have read a few places on the net.

Re: Way to remove 160 char. limit on texts?

I know verizon doesn't. I think they're the only carrier that doesn't. If I'm not mistaken, what happens is the verizon servers automatically split it up on one end and stitch it together on the other, just because of SMS's inferior capabilities. If my phone would allow more than 160 characters, I know it would still do that, the splitting and stitching of the texts. It's rather annoying to get 3 texts from my girlfriend when I would have gotten only 1 on my dumb phone. And she gets multiple texts from me as well, instead of just one.

Re: Way to remove 160 char. limit on texts?

160 characters is a universal limitation of the networks (ATT, Verizon, Sprint, whoever!). There has to be a limitation on the number of characters, or networks would not be able to charge people in an unbiased fasion. My two word txt msg would cost as much as your paragraph txt msg.

It will show up as one paragraph/threaded text message on your phone, but the other person will get multiple messages, broken up into pieces, each 160-chars max in length, so if you send a 1,000 chars message, it will show up on the sending phones as 1 txt, but the network breaks it up on the receiving end into 7 messages. (1,000 divided by 160 - 6.35, thus 7 separates txt's)

You can try it if you want...send a very long text message to a normal phone (non-smartphone) or even another smartphone it will get broken up too on the receiving end. Be careful when you do this...I have unlimited texting, but the number of messages went up when I got a smartphone because it was so easy to type on my flip out keyboard...Each messages was really going out as 2 or 3 txts since I typed so much.

I hate to tell you, you're incorrect. At least in the case of verizon. I know that previously I could send rather large messages, well over 160, and it would count as 1 message. My girlfriend, also on verizon, would get the text as a single entity. That also counted as one text received. On my phone, as soon as I got it, she started complaining that everything I send gets sent to her as multiple messages and she gets a message saying that media objects were removed any time she sends a text over 160 characters to me. Since 95% of my texts are to her, and 90% of the other 5% are verizon customers, so there wouldn't be additional charges. That is why I want to remove the limitation. If I send it to someone who doesn't support over 160 (not verizon), it will automatically cut me off.

I agree with you. I've never had this problem with my dumbphones either. I could send up to 7 x 160 characters as one text. Also, I heard word from somewhere that a guy talking to a verizon rep was informed that it's a limitation with Windows Mobile devices. I know it's not the carriers, as I have personal experience where it's not.

Re: Way to remove 160 char. limit on texts?

bottom line, regardless of if you thinks its the network or the smartphone, who cares anyway...? i mean just get your GF a smartphone (the XV6900 is $50 with 2yr, or $100 on ebay w/o contract), then they will come in in order anyway in the threaded view, and will not be hard to read. A broken up txt is only hard to read on non smartphones since they have much smaller screens, and have to click to open each one individually.

I also never have a problem with this since I just call the person....I mean why spend 30 minutes texting 10 pages of information when you can call them and tell them the same information in 15 seconds? lol. I never understood why people would send paragraphs and pages of text messages, when they could just press send to call the person and be done with it in 10% of the time. Plus, texting is so impersonal...I think if you get the the point where you are typing that much in a txt message you should just get a data package and send an email.
