HTC Touch - USB will charge, but will not connect over ActiveSync
Hey folks,
I've done some searching on these forums and others, and hoping someone could help me out. I have an HTC Touch from Bell, and it appears that somewhere over the last week, all USB connections seem to not detect. Weird thing is, the phone charges fine over USB. Problem I don't think is the ROM I have installed (OMJ), and I haven't really installed any custom apps. I've done a factory reset on the ROM so everything is back to stock on the rom. I'd like to try to get another ROM on the phone just to rule it out, or put the stock Bell one on just so I can return it, but all the instructions tell me to put the VOGUIMG.NBH file on the SDCard and boot into the Bootloader, and it should try to reinstall from the SDCard. Unfortunely, no such luck. If anyone has any ideas on what I could try to get a ROM on this phone with no ActiveSync connection possible, please let me know. Has anyone tried to install ROMs over SDCards, or perhaps over Bluetooth? Cheers, Joey |

It's possible that you bent one of the pins on the USB port on your phone, check it out.

Re: HTC Touch - USB will charge, but will not connect over ActiveSync
have you checked all the setting on yer active sync on yer pc, i had the same problem a while back and had to mess around with it a little bit before i got it to connect again, i doubt its the rom cause a few others have had this problem with active sync when you flash a new rom, i think its because the AS on your pc is still set to read your old rom and needs to be reset to read your new one, just mess around with the settings on AS on your pc and see what happens

Re: HTC Touch - USB will charge, but will not connect over ActiveSync
Try going to Setting-Connections-USB to PC- and uncheck where it says Enable advanced network Functionality.
Hope this helps! |
Re: HTC Touch - USB will charge, but will not connect over ActiveSync
Do a reset. Play around with it for some time. Make some calls.
Connect your phone via USB and you should be fine getting ActiveSync'ed again. The point is do not connect your phone to PC right after a reset. |
Re: HTC Touch - USB will charge, but will not connect over ActiveSync
After you enable "advanced network functions" then try switching to "RDNS" just to establish a connection then switch back to the normal Activesync connection...This is what I do to establish after flashing sometimes.

Re: HTC Touch - USB will charge, but will not connect over ActiveSync
This seems to be a reoccurring problem, you are not alone on this one. I blame microsoft. The activesync is a booger and I agree you need to check the settings on it. I would uninstall it and then reinstall it. That worked for me. Also AS does not work on vista you need to use the microsoft mobile software for vista. The usb charge shows that you are connecting just that the pc software does not recognize the device. The ROM you use should not affect the pc as the pc only sees a "device". hope that helps

Re: HTC Touch - USB will charge, but will not connect over ActiveSync
I appreciate all the replies guys! Sadly, I've gone down each of these routes. I've installed Activesync on 3 XP machines, and the Vista version of ActiveSync (The name escapes me at the moment), and all three show the same symptoms. I've completed ruled out ActiveSync at this point, and it's most likely rom (Doubtful) or hardware (Most Sensible at this point).
What I need to do is to rule the ROM part out, which I'm pretty sure it's not, but would be nice if I could install it via an SDCard just to rule that part out...At this point I'm going to see if I can get a replacement device. |
Re: HTC Touch - USB will charge, but will not connect over ActiveSync
Do you have the original disc that was in the box when you recieved the device...

Re: HTC Touch - USB will charge, but will not connect over ActiveSync
Yep, I do. All that was really on it was ActiveSync though, I believe. I don't know if it had any real drivers per-say. I can certain give that disk a look over and see what might be on it. Hadn't thought of that.

The connector just might be dirty. Take a toothpick and gently rub the dirt off the pins.

Reaing your post was like looking in a mirror. I've also decided that the problem is that the pins on the phone have worn or bent and are no longer connecting properly to the cable. After tearing my hair out for a couple weeks and blaming (coincidentaly) OMJ's rom I discovered that one of the six or so mini-usb cables that I have will work..most of the time. I'd suggest that you try a couple more if you have them handy. Even if the port is messed up fo good, you can flash roms using an sd card (not sdhc! - I use a 1GB). Just put the nbh file in the root directory of a fat32 formatted card and name it VOGUIMG.nbh Then enter bootloader (Camera+Power+poking+soft reset) to get the tri-colored screen and follow the directions to flash the new rom. Good luck! |

Think i'll try to do the toothpick trick, I've heard it a few times. However I have a leather case for it, and it would be pretty hard for it to get dirty. I take pretty good care of my gadgets, but at this point I'll try anything. Now, getting back to the flashing roms. You say not sdhc...I have a 4GB, but it's a Micro SDCH....Maybe I should try to find a smaller one? When I entered the tri-colored screen, I see: VOGU100 MFG SPL-2.31.CoKe CPLD-3 Funny thing is, when I have it plugged in, it says USB. What a tease ](*,) Guess I'll try to find a 1GB one and see if that works instead. Cheers! |

Re: HTC Touch - USB will charge, but will not connect over ActiveSync
i had the same problem with my phn and tried 2 diff cables but for my situation it was not the cord or program activsynce which i hate by the way it turned out the phn was defective so i had to take it to sprint they did exchange it out since i was under the 1 year warrenty and they gave me another phn with same dam problem so i had to exchange that one 2 so i think it just with pins inside the phn may be damage but hopefully you still have warrenty reload orginal rom and send that thing back

Re: HTC Touch - USB will charge, but will not connect over ActiveSync
Hey guys,
Just wanted to give you an update. Based on earlier information, I was able to flash to a stock Bell rom using a 512MB MicroSD. Thank you! I couldn't get it to work on my 4GB, and I guess that's because of it being a different type of card. I told the folks at our Bell World store, and they put in a replacement. I got my new phone, and now ActiveSync will work. I tried to clean it up as much as I could, however still had no work. It took a hardware replacement to get this fixed. I just wanted to thank everyone for their responses and help on this one. Cheers, Joey |
Re: HTC Touch - USB will charge, but will not connect over ActiveSync
Have had the same problem for a long time, found the problem. The pin in the middle of my usb port on the phone was stuck. Used a needle and pushed a little on it. After that the phone was recognised by Active Sync.
Background: The phone charged through usb but was never found as a device. Tried several cables, softreset, hardreset and all the different settings as suggested all over the web for this problem. So remember to check the usbport on the phone..And thx for a good thread. Tord |
