data disconnecting while in standby? (Instant Messenger Problems)

i apologize if this has been covered, but i honestly don't know what i'd search for.
it seems that my data stops sending and receiving when my phone goes into standby (the screen is off)
i'm not positive if that's why, but when i'm logged into AIM 2.0 or OZ Instant Messenger it completely disconnects when the phone is in standby ... palringo and IM+ won't receive any messages until the screen is turned back on and it has a second to reconnect.
is there anything i can do about this? on my Treo 700wx, AIM 2.0 didn't disconnect in standby while OZ and IM+ did (never tried palringo)... my touch isn't even keeping AIM 2.0 on
thank you
-Randy
