What are carrier customizations?

I've searched a few forums but I still don't quite understand what these things do. I just got my Vogue (Bell) a few days ago and I was about to upgrade it with the lastest Bell rom. Most of the people were advising to soft reset when the customizations start and I was wondering why.. what does Bell actually install? And why is it bad?
