GPS function why do they need Data connection? can someone point out?

I'm wondering if turn off data connection , will GPS working? do they need to connect to A-GPS Server first?

the reason why I'm asking is I'm in Canada right now, don't want to occur roaming charge when I go to states. =D>

I just come back from States last weekend, check my unbill usage $2 roaming charge in there, I used Garmin XT and never check Weather etc........any suggestion?

tried "home only", won't pick up GPS Signal at all, keep searching GPS Device
tried "flight mode" will work sometimes, then GPS freeze, have to reboot and put phone backing in roaming mode.

can someone point out what setting should I put?

Re: GPS function do they need Data connection?

depends what your using as your gps program, if its sprintnav then yes you need data to download the maps as you use it. Any program that has you store the maps on your unit or mem card should work without data from what I hear but I would assume its harder without the assistance of agps.

TomTom will work while in Flight Mode, Garmin will not.

Re: GPS function do they need Data connection?

Try these registry settings and let me know if it works, I've never tried it but I'm curious if it works or not as well.

HKLM/Software/HTC/SUPL AGPS
EnableAGPS=0
EnableGPSSmartMode=0
GPSMode=1

Re: GPS function do they need Data connection?

there are reports of a connection still starting with the gps with these reg settings.
(I have seen a data connection establish with my mogul(s) set with those regs..)
it can be disabled, search for connection.xml or connections.xml for instructions..

also look into quickgps as that will download the ephemeris for a week at a time. (can be done over activesync to intenet connected pc)

Re: GPS function do they need Data connection?

i thought agps used data connection always as it is using the cell towers and needs to establish a connection to detect. it really shouldnt work in flight mode.

Re: GPS function do they need Data connection?

Hey guys, I'm in NZ, GPS does work in flight mode. I'm using Garmin XT and frequently have the phone in flight mode and I have no trouble whatsoever getting satellite locks and navigating. Garmin will only work on Touch if registered. Look around I'm sure no one wants to pay for a data connection to use GPS.

Re: GPS function do they need Data connection?

IF YOU ARE HAVING ISSUES LOCKING ON SATELLITES WITH GPS ON NEW ROM, READ THIS THREAD. IT FIXED MY ISSUES WHEN MY GPS ALL THE SUDDEN STOPPED WORKING WITH NEW SPRINT ROM:

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=33784

DATA CONNECTION HAS A LOT TO DO WITH IT. FORGET CHANGING THE REGISTRY VALUES, LEAVE AGPS TO 1, GPSSMART MODE TO 1, AND CHANGE GPSMODE TO 4

Re: GPS function do they need Data connection?

I think data connection has a lot to do with it only if your using agps mode!!!

Edit: Just tested - fly mode on > data connection off > GPS toggle gets 8 sats in 20 seconds inside.

A bunch of us do use AGPS and thats why many are having this issue. For Sprint users this is a solution to getting locks under 5 seconds after the intial lock.

Some are getting their connection dropped and an automatic data connection might be breaking their GPS connection too. Some have to soft reset to get GPS to work again, maybe this fixes it too.

Im not sure why you would want to prevent people from trying it out. Its not like it will hurt their phones or like they have to do Registry changes. Its just a suggested solution because it worked for me.

By the way, I did change my registry setting to NOT use AGPS and I still didnt get a GPS lock. I wasnt about to Hard Reset again and I think this is why people want solutions, because they dont want to Hard Reset after having their phones all set up like they want it. After spending so much time configuring your phone this can be very annoying and upsetting.

So, just let them try it for themselves and cross out this suggestion as a possible solution if it doesnt work.
