Alarm while in silent mode

Is there a way to set up your sound settings to where it the phone is silent with the exception of alarms?

Do you mean silent, meaning no sound, or vibrate? Either way, you could go to Start -> Settings -> Sounds and Notifications and turn everything either off or to vibrate, with the exception of alarms.

I just cooked a 20273 rom from kitchen and this feature showed up. It wasn't there when I had gps 3.02 rom. Really good feature.

Go to "Clock and Alarms" and under "more" tab you will have option "sound alarms even when device is set to silent or vibrate" that you can check mark.
