iirc the standard filemanager doesnt overwrite ROM files that well, it is usually suggested to use Total Commander, or Resco Exploere etc to overwrite ROM files.. as far as editing them in place, phm Notepad might work but I've had issues with it and UNIX vs windows text formatting. I use Resco's built-in editor for editing things on the phone these days. Same as some registry edits, after you make changes, you may need to wait a few minutes before resetting... sometimes takes a bit to "settle in" or something....
I will try to edit those xml's on myphone and let you know how it goes..

update -- forgot I don't have Resco on this ROM. Used total commander however to edit a XML file in windows directory, waited about 1min, reset and the edits are still in place. Couldnt find the files you mentioned however, so i edited QD_images.xml ( or something close to that )
