HTC Touch trouble...

Hi all, I have an HTC touch and I just completed the new Sprint update (the official one). everything is great, but for some reason it won't make a sound or show text and emails when recieved. I have gone into the sounds and notifications area and set it to the dog bark and to show a pop-up on the screen, but it won't stay saved. it will do it for acouple of texts but then it won't do anything and then I look at the phone and I have missed text/email. I then go into the sounds and go under notifications and the sound and notify with pop-up are unchecked again. I have don't this maybe 20 times and it won't stay saved. is there anything that I can do under reg edit? thank you .
