Good Car Mount - any suggestions?

hi,

I'm looking for a car mount for my HTC touch.
Nothing fancy, it just has to work and be reasonably priced.

I came across those windshield suction mounts...but I'm not sure if those are legal in California.

Thank You

Here's a low price item from www.meritline.com

360 Degree Adjustable Universal Windshield PDA holder for MP3 Player, Cell phone, GPS and PDA, Free Standard Shipping
Total is $7 after $6 coupon code: M2480506OFF
Expiry Date: 08/03/2008

http://www.meritline.com/360-degree-...da-holder.html

found it from

http://www.cheapstingybargains.com/?s=360+pda

Even though the website doesn't mention it there is a flat thin round base mounting device(glued down and is the size of the suction piece) that can be put on your dashboard so you can put the suction end piece onto it. I got 4 of these and they all work pretty well. I think it's a great deal for this price. I ordered each item on a separate order. I do not know if they will allow you combine one coupon code to multiple items on the same order. Well, you can try and see if it will work if you need more than one.

Cali Vehicle Code just says you cant have anything obstructing your view. As long as you mount it low enough, it shouldn't be a problem. Check WMexperts store.

Go to the big, evil beast--WalMart--and check out the automotive section. There is a vent mount by Scosche that's under 10 bucks, it's near the car stereo stuff, it clips on an a/c vent, so still eye level. It fits the Vogue just fine.

yea, I was also looking a navigation solution.
It seems to cup holder is a good choice though if you want to have your phone in close arm reach while driving.

Anyway, do you actually own any of these?
How is the suctioning when used without the adhesive stuff? Will it securely hold a Touch? How long will it reach when mounted to the windshield?
And most of all, will I be able to access the USB port?

have you tried this with a phone of that size? I mean, will it support the weight? How do these vent mounts work? Is there any adhesive involved?

Thank You

ProClip. Expensive but top notch custom mounts for most cars.

I only have the 360 Degree Adjustable Universal Windshield PDA holder.
I bought one for myself and 3 more for family members who also owns the HTC Touch. I have never installed the adhesive base since I only have used it on the windshield. It holds up well on the windshield. So far it has not fallen off. You will need to make some adjustments so the two sides are pushed in well enough to hold the phone in place so that in case you brake too hard the phone doesn't come flying off the holder.

I guess you can try to use the suction end(without the adhesive base)to mount on your dashboard to see if it will hold. If not, you can always apply the adhesive base so that it will give a better suction for the pda holder.

This PDA holder is long enough where you can adjust for how close/far you want it to be. I'm pretty sure there are better PDA holders out there but for $7 I think it's a great bargain.

I'm using the exact one right now for my htc touch--it holds the weight just fine, the arms are adjustable. The beauty of this setup is that there is NO adhesive, just two sturdy clips that go onto the vent blades. They are strong enough to not come off accidentally but you can take them out if you want without damaging anything. FWIW, I think it's a heck of a lot better than a cupholder mount--the things is practically at eye level.

You can't use a windshield mount in California. It's illegal. A cup holder mount is good for one of those mini laptops like an eeepc but not ideal for a PDA. You want the PDA closer to eye level for GPS use.

Here's a good vent mount for $13 shipped.

That's the one! It's 9.97 in the automotive section of super wal-mart. They also have one that is a bit more adjustable, also by Scosche, that's in the electronics island next to the TomTom and Sirius radio stuff, this one swivels/pivots, but I felt it was a bit too much for a sleek phone like the Touch, so I went with the simpler one. Honestly, you can't go wrong with this.

Just curious, Where do people in cali put the GPS device? It's more dangerous If U don't put it on the windshiled.

Cali is it's own little country isn't it? They thrive on bypassing any logic or common sense just to be different. Before focusing on how a phone or GPS impairs someones driving, they should worry about making all of the cars bullet proof! :)

Re: Good Car Mount - any suggestions?

Arkon makes a quality, versatile all-in-one product kit that allows mounting in the vents or via suction device on either the dash or windshield. I own two for use with a Touch, and they work well in both a casual (auto) as well as industrial (Semi Tractor-Trailer) application with a minimum of installation hassle.

The way the device holding arms are designed allows you to easily insert the mini usb, access reset, adjust volume and hit the on/off switch while your phone is held in the well padded cradle. The extension arm itself allows for a wide range of adjustments to suit the individual user's applications, and all the adjustment points hold their set position well under some pretty rugged (Northern Illinois/Southern Wisconsin) road conditions. Yes, the extension arm is quite susceptible to vibration, but even in the Semi on the worst of roads the device has never worked free of set adjustments with the Touch on board, or thrown the phone from the cradle.

I assure you I have no stake in Arkon. For what it is worth, I am simply an "industrial" user who puts these kind of devices through some pretty tough challenges day after day, and the simple to install and easy to use mounts these guys make has cleared the "gorilla" test with flying colors.

The accord is sweet. Had it for a couple of years now. It's a 2003 six speed so I suffer from having lead foot. I know what you mean about the new accords being big. Not sure why they did that. I think I'm going to keep my car for a couple of years then get the next generation RSX when it comes out. It's supposed to have a similar turbocharged engine as the RDX and I think AWD too.....IDK will have to see how much it cost because the Accord will still be fun to drive 5 years from now....

so let me get this straight, you somehow hooked up your phone to the car speakers? I was wondering about the same. I have a AUX input on my radio, which I usually use for my iPod. So, could I get some AUX splitter that allows me to hook up my iPod and phone to the speaker system?

Or how exactly did you do that?

You have to use a dash mount (or some other solution like a vent mount). I don't think a dash mount is necessarily more dangerous, but I agree the law is stupid. The other law that is asinine is you can put no tint on the driver and front passenger side windows although you can have limo tint (if you want it) on the three back windows.

Bad idea. If U hit a bump, U'll be reaching the phone somewhere on the floor. luck if U don't break the LCD

Re: Good Car Mount - any suggestions?

I'll be buying one of this fasho. Don't need to adjust the cradle because it's already custom fit for the touch. USB port is accesible. Power buttom is not pressed by the holder when in landscape mode coz U just have to tilt it. I think this is the best windshield car mount if the state permits it. Good find brother.
The only downside is putting the phone in and out of the cradle. this might scratch the phone housing isn't it?

Mine hasn't put 1 scratch on it. The top part has a spring and bends back to easily to insert/remove. You can also just detach the actual holster part, leaving the mount inplace. Supposedly it works as a dash mount to, I'd assume it have to be a smooth surface.

Godd to hear it doesn't damage the shell, is there a version of a custom une like this that's vent mount?
There's been cars in my work car park broken into becase of the tell tale mount or suction cup mark from GPS units...

I've just received mine and it's great, no buttons blocked, the USB port and reset button are free.

Even the camera is not fully blocked by the mount.

Rock solid installation, and the phone slips in and out fast and with just one hand.

Very glad I chose this one instead of a generic mount.

I use a powered mount:

http://www.accessorypost.com/touchcarkit.html
(Whom I ordered from)

or:

http://www.wirelessground.com/touchcarmount.html

It powers the touch and provides a speakerphone....also a 2.5 mm audio out jack to go into my stereo.

3 issues:

1. The audio out seems to be audio limited to protect the small handsfree speaker - read little bass output

2. The cradle must be lifted of of the mounting arm in one hand and then insert the phone with the other (not a big deal, just hang it on the arm when done - when it was new 1/2 the time the insertion would cause a soft reset on the phone - though it has been a long time since it has done it now - I use it every day.

3. Will not work with any extended battery.

Re: Good Car Mount - any suggestions?

Looks good! You think it will work with mogul/titan ppc6800?

EDIT: they do have one for Mogul as well:
http://www.buygpsnow.com/HAiCOM-Cust...8925__990.aspx

http://www.buygpsnow.com/img/product...HI_018_200.gif

EDIT 2: I purchased this mount.
- Quality is top notch. The cradle fits and holds the phone perfectly. The mount grips the windshield, fits and orients robustly.
- Atleast the Mogul model has this defect in that it continuously keeps the camera button depressed. I contacted the distributor to check if that was a random defect or a design flaw. They replied back stating that it could only be a design flaw. I liked the mount so much that I decided to customize it myself. I cut the portion of the cradle which was depressing the camera button with a hot knife and voila! Works great! really good quality.
- Only limitations are that the resolution of its movements is not as fine as I would have liked. Still not something you see as a compromise at all.

Hi guys -

I am a reseller for ProClip (I focus on Prius products), but I thought I'd let you know that I've posted the Touch holder up in our Shop. It comes with free shipping, which saves you about $8.50 from buying it through ProClip.

If anyone needs the Vehicle Mounts, let me know and I'll extend the same free shipping discount to you.

Just trying to give back a little to this site that has turned my Touch into my favorite phone ever.
