Activesync Problems - Please Help

I got my HTC Touch a few months ago. I recently tried to do the activesync on my computer because I wanted to back up my contacts and upload all my calendar stuff that I had on my phone. My outlook was just installed to do this, so it had no contact and no calendar information. When I did the sync, it erased all the info I had in my phone. Contacts and calendar. I was under the impression that they would sync together and it would put all the info from the phone onto the computer, mix and match and update.... not just upload everything on my computer to my phone and overwrite it (which there was nothing to upload, so it erased everything). Please help. Is it even possible to just upload to the contacts and calendar for a back up? I do not and probably will never use the contacts via outlook for email or anything, although it would be nice to use the calendar option to type all my incoming info on the computer and upload it to my phone, instead of having to key in everything on the phone. If there is any better and free software to that please let me know, or let me know what I might be doing wrong. I used outlook 2000 and the trial version of 07 that came with the activesync software. Every time it deletes all my contacts etc. I was able to bluetooth all my contacts back onto my phone from my old phone about 5 times now, but it is still a pain.
There are three options at the beginning to choose from, to sync with your mobile and computer, to upload from the pc to your mobile and not to sync right now. I always pick the first one.
IS THERE ANY PROGRAM OUT THERE THAT CAN BACK UP YOUR CONTACTS AND SYNC UP YOUR EMAIL? No email set up etc.. Just something simple. Please help.
