There's no use for data with most commercial GPS apps. The maps are loaded with the software so what use would there be for data? And GPS is transmitted from satellites. I've also read that people have used GPS with phone in airplane so there was no way for data to be accessed

with Garmin Mobile XT, you use data to download weather and traffic updates. you do, however, have the option to disable this feature.
