HTC Touch Tethering over Bluetooth (Sprint)

Hello everybody!

I've always been able to do whatever I've needed to with my PPC devices - thanks to this board in many respects! I'm having a spot of trouble, though, and I thought I'd actually post to see if anybody has any ideas.

What I'm trying to do is tether my HTC Touch using USBModem to my new laptop (an HP tx2000z running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit Edition), and I'm not having much luck. First of all, let me say that I can easily tether over USB, but I like to have all my options open, and I'm kind of picky about solving a problem once I face one.

OK, here's what happens ...

I have done all of the registry hack (MultiNAI, rilphone.ddl removal) just in case. My Touch pairs to my laptop fine. I select the "Dial Up Networking" Service during the pairing process, and my laptop even sees the phone as "Standard Modem Over Bluetooth," which is about what I'd expect.

The problem is when I set up a connection and dial. I get the error "678: The remote computer did not respond." I don't know why, but I (perhaps erroneously) assumed that maybe I needed to set up a dedicated COM port for this. My computer has reserved COM5 for this communication, but I can't find a way to make my Touch use COM5 (the COM ports area in Bluetooth Settings seems utterly useless).

Does anybody have any idea how to do this? I'm at my wits end with this one. Oh, incidentally, I CAN connecti using ICS and a Bluetooth PAN, but I want to use USBModem and try to avoid using the canned application. What I'm going for here is Bluetooth DUN.

Any ideas? Help, flames on my intelligence, whatever ... just give me some ideas :)

MM

I just got my Touch last night, so I have not had a change to play around too much with it.
WHen I get home from work tonight, I will use my vast knowledge of computers/networks and I will play around with it.
I will post my results.

why not just use ics for BT tethering? sprint doesnt charge you for tethering on an unlimited data plan unless you abuse it.

Re: HTC Touch Tethering over Bluetooth (Sprint)

Gotta love that unlimited plan.

Re: HTC Touch Tethering over Bluetooth (Sprint)

Did you ever get an answer on How to do this? I have spent the past 4hrs searching everywhere on how to use my Sprint Touch as a bluetooth modem (xdadev's, here, Google). It works fine with OMJ's latest rom using ICS USB (Touch initiated), but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to bluetooth tether it.

In ICS I have two options, USB and Bluetooth PAN. I assume that if I do a bluetooth tether (ie initiate the connection from my PC), then I will not need to use ICS from the Touch to initiate? My overall goal is to be able to leave the touch in its holster or in my briefcase and be able to connect wirelessly when at client sites (initiated from from lappy). I used to have an ATT Hermes and could do this just fine using a bluetooth dun profile on the pc, unfortunately I cannot seem to do it with the Touch. Needless to say this is quite frustrating!

Why would you prefer bluetooth? its noticeably slower. check my sig.

Re: HTC Touch Tethering over Bluetooth (Sprint)

When I am in places where I have limited space such as client meetings in conference rooms, or using my laptop mount in my car, I would like to be able to do it wirelessly over BT. Speed is not always a factor, but the ability to Sametime or get email through my VPN is. I have a PAM plan so should be able to do it just fine without any special tweaks that the Vision plan user have. Just not been able to figure out how to get it to work.

Oh, i gotcha. Also, i found this thread on another forum. I did not read it in its entirety, and i know its for the 6700, but i assume it would quite similar, if not the same. Or at least get you going in the direction...

Re: HTC Touch Tethering over Bluetooth (Sprint)

Thanks for the link and your help. Too bad I have XP :(

I also noted in the thread that 3.x roms no longer have DUN (which seemed to be what I already found) and only Bluetooth PAN. I spent about 30 min at Sprint this evening trying to get info on how to set this up and they did not know either. Hell, I would be happy if someone could tell me how to get bluetooth PAN to work.

I did find the following link which I will test shortly:

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=11146

If this does not work, then I may just exchange for an Instinct, Palm 800W; or, go back to my EVDO REV A card and just add a cheap phone. I just need to be able to have my lappy access the internet without wiring up on the road or in meetings. The card is honestly the best performing, but requires me to have 2 contracts vs just 1 with a phone + PAM plan.

Thanks for that link above!! I was trying to get bluetooth tethering to work on my Verizon XV6900 and couldn't get it to work. If I went to my phone in my bluetooth devices on my laptop dial up network was not an available service. I installed the DUN cab file (which I'll attach to this message) on the XV6900, ran it, then reset the phone, erased my phone from my bluetooth devices on the laptop and readded it - and wala dial up networking was now an available service. Then I just added a dial up connection through bluetooth and was up and running.

I had no problem tethering over BT with a mini-usb BT module I bought from Frys and the latest Rev A rom. Connected right away with no tweaks or hacks. USB cable also works with no problem. Not sure why people are having problems.

Re: HTC Touch Tethering over Bluetooth (Sprint)

Thanks for the info Steve. I tried some of the steps last night but still could not see DUN. I have since uninstalled and reinstalled the BT stack on my Thinkpad T61p and am in the process of updating OMJ's rom to the latest. Once completed, I will test with the cab posted above.

Do you know exactly what this cab file does?

I actually had the option of BT DUN before I installed this cab, and after installing that it no longer shows up, even after uninstalling it.

I installed it and it did not show up for me. Not quite sure either.

Re: HTC Touch Tethering over Bluetooth (Sprint)

Did you reset your phone (with the reset button next to the usb port)? and did you remove your phone from your bluetooth devices list on your laptop and then pair it again? In my case there was no dial up networking listed on my laptop under my phone device in bluetooth devices. After taking the above steps the dial up networking service appeared. Keep in mind I'm on a Verizon XV6900

Re: HTC Touch Tethering over Bluetooth (Sprint)

Ohhhh, so it shows under your lappy's BT services for the device. I thought it was on the phone. Thanks, I will pair shortly, just tweaking after the rom update.

I have the bluetooth modem part working. Can you please explain what I need to do to create the dial up connection so my laptop will use it?

Re: HTC Touch Tethering over Bluetooth (Sprint)

In Vista you just go to Start->Connect To, then click on the "setup a connection or network" link near the bottom of that window. Then click on the dial up connection option and it should be pretty self explanatory from there. You'll need to know the number you need to dial and your username and password. If your on Verizon the phone # is "#777", the username is "yourphonenumber@vzw3g.com" and the password is "vzw".

ICS is a program included in Sprint WinMo devices called Internet Connection Sharing. Are you trying to tether to a Mac or a PC?

No problem, but since you are on windows i would suggest using the USB mode whenever you can. it's much faster as you can tell from my sig. I am forced to use BT as i am a proud Mac owner, so BT is my only option. If you need any help setting it up, please feel free to report back. If i cant be of help im sure someone on the forums can be. :D

Hi Negrito,

Do you have a "Favorite" guide or instruction that I should follow. I have printed out the "TalynOne" guide and "SledgeHammer" guide.

Which is BETTER!?!? Or is there another one!

Thanks,

G!:)

Sorry i never read either one. I just did it, but im pretty tech savvy. Just try and do it, then if you have any problems or questions come back and ask. None of this will hurt your phone in any way so just try and see what happens. :D

I didn't have any problems setting up BT PAN-based tethering w/ my HTC Touch (stock WM 6.1). I'm using XP, if that makes a difference... Are people having problems with this, or are y'all trying to do something different and I'm misunderstanding?

Re: HTC Touch Tethering over Bluetooth (Sprint)

I have everything set up but I keep getting Error code 67. I do not have a user name or password on my phone so I am not sure why it will not work. I installed the BT cab file listed in this forum and I see the BT PAN and Dial up but when I try to connect with either one it fails. I have latest rom from Sprint.

doesnt work for me, go to comm manager, internet sharing,

usb works fine

bluetooth pan says "device setup finished, connect bluetooth pan"

on my pc i have found the device but do not have bluetooth pan as a service, only have file push, vcard, and after downloading the cab in this thread - dial up networking.

dial up networking sets up and installs but i never get connection.

i have xp home and the latest htc touch rom from the htc website (updated about 2 month ago). also i am using sprint. anyone know what im doing wrong?

Please help, i hate using cables and my touch usb port is ****ed up so i have to hold it a certain way to make it work.

Re: HTC Touch Tethering over Bluetooth (Sprint)

Thanks for your posts Steve. Using an HTC Touch and Win XP, I was striking out with BT DUN. But after installing your cab file from post #12 and following your comments in post #17, I just about had it working. The only extra step needed was to go to Control Panel > Network Connections on the PC, right click on Bluetooth Network Connection under Personal Area Network, and click Connect. It's working fine now with ICS.
