HTC Chimes in on March Video Update Email
So, I found myself thinking that maybe ATI could help us out. I CC'd htc and sprint on my email to ATI and what do you know, HTC chimed in on it.
Read Below -------------------------------------------------------- Dear ATI, As a loyal customer of AMD & ATI products I jumped on the HTC TOUCH mobile phone bandwagon. The phone promised an exceptional multimedia experience. I believed this to be true as the chipset inside the phone (Qualcomm MSM7500) included a built in Imageon video. Once I purchased the phone it became clear that the phone was not using the hardware to its fullest potential as it does not live up to the performance of its previous generation's incarnations. As a result, many users have begun to complain to the phone's manufacturer as they produce other phones with the same video performance problems. The media has extensively covered this story labeling HTC as the culprit due to their lack of video drivers but, I believe that one has to give people the benefit of the doubt. Currently, Qualcomm, the producer of the HTC Touch and other phones based around the MSM 7200 & 7500, is in the midst of a patent infringement case. Lately the news has been that they are to cease chipset support that infringes on patents from Broadcom. Unfortunately, that leaves us with no foreseeable way of improving our multimedia experience. HTC's excuse is that we did not *explicitly* promise the use of the hardware acceleration (Imageon Hardware). That statement wouldn't bother most users if it only affected the top 1% power users with an insatiable power appetite. But it affects all users. Users that know the origin the of the issue are less likely to purchase HTC products due to the poor customer service and greediness of HTC and HTC apparently could care less. I come to you as a K6,K7,K8 user and as a frustrated consumer. I believe that ATI has an opportunity to walk away from this issue with some great free publicity by (if possible & legal) providing the Qualcomm 7200 and 7500 user community with the video drivers necessary to unlock the promised (and undelivered) potential of our devices. According to the latest reply from HTC, there is a non-driver fix for our performance issues to be released in March '08. It is currently Friday, March 28 and not a word from them. Please reply with any outcome as this will ultimately play a role in my decision to switch carriers and cell phone. Best Regards, --------------------------------------------------------- Hello John Llombart, We here at HTC definitely understand your concern about having the latest software available for your device, in this case regarding the HTC Touch. Currently there is no information available regarding a "non-driver" update scheduled for the end of march. Thank you for your inquiry, HTC Technical Support I hope we have answered your question in detail. Feel free to contact us again if you have any further questions.
