Re: Upgrading Tutorial For Verizon XV6900!!! Radio 3.42.30 with working GPS

Hey Guys . . .

New user, new poster here -- Thought I'd share my story and ask a couple of questions.

I got my XV6900 about two weeks ago. I want my GPS, so I've been holding out for Verizon to release their ROM, but that doesn't look like it's going to happen. And even if it does, I have a feeling they're not going to unlock the GPS (one Verizon guy told me GPS was available on my phone, but he wouldn't "guarantee" that it would work with any program other than Verizon's VZNavigator).

Anyway, so I nervously flashed my ROM to OMJ's custom. I was pretty sure I bricked it a couple of times, but luckily I didn't.

After I flashed it, everything worked great. I haven't had any problems with any systems (internet, messaging, bluetooth, etc.). I only had to dial #28801 to update. I did have one "hiccup". While I was on the phone yesterday, it randomly rebooted. After that, I couldn't dial out -- I was getting authentication error messages. No problem though, I called Verizon and they fixed it.

I do have two quick questions (ok, three):

1. How do I uninstall programs that came with OMJ's custom version, if that's possible? I like most of them, but some I don't need.

2. Is there any way to move installed programs from the phone to the storage card?

3. What are the phone codes for?

Thanks for everything. You guys don't realize how much people like me read your posts and rely on your superior knowledge!

Welcome :) You have to manually delete the .lnk files for the programs to delete them, they should be located in the /windows folder. Even after, there may be traces of them still (which you probably will never see) in the registry etc... Manually reinstalling the programs to the storage card is the best way to get them there (via .cab installer file). The phone codes are really useless if you have no knowledge with them. You rarely need them if ever. They are mainly for diagnostics purposes or sometimes, advanced purposes which I highly doubt will ever need. The only one you need to know is *228 to update your connectivity.

"HARD RESET BY HOLDING THE SEND, END, AND RESET BUTTONS". i would change this to press the Send, then while pressing that press the End, and then while holding those 2, press and keep holding the RESET button (aka all 3 now being held down) until you get the grey screen. i accidentally sometimes goof this step and do a more control+alt+ delete action, like ill hold them all in and assume when reset is pressed ill get the grey screen.

Ill would also add all the roms that we have tried on vz and have worked at the front of the thread. and also votes for each one. like list ghetto, omj, hulk, jds clean, etc and links to their threads roms.
the votes can be changed so just list who votes for what rom. I think theres maybe 20 of us verizon users here so i dont think it would get crazy unmanagable. something like this:
Votes:
Ghetto 3 (arianhojat-v713, jakemalone-v715, blahblah-v718)
OMJ Clean 2(blehblah-v3.03, janesmith-v3.03)
Hulk 1 (johnsmith-v6.66)
JD Clean 2 (...etc)

Re: Upgrading Tutorial For Verizon XV6900!!! Radio 3.42.30 with working GPS

Just bought my 6900 today for about $300 so of course the first thing I did was to void that pesty warranty as soon as possible. After much trial and error I now have GPS and everything working (using the 3.02 Kitchen). Strange thing is that it takes about 15 minutes to find a signal after a soft reset. It was tripping me out for awhile and I thought I broke my phone, but it's just dog-***** slow to start up.

Has anyone else experienced this? I think I'm going to cook another ROM tonight and see what happens.

I wasnt sure which ones. i thought maybe just generalize them and let users say what versions they using.
maybe add dhharverys rom and option for custom/ppc kitcken.

Im gonna try a few more roms tonight. upgraded to latest sprint dcd rom. omj still not giving me gps locks at all really. will try dharveys and jds clean then go back to ghetto if not satisfactory...

EDIT: dharveys is really different/interesting. but no gps locks or with jds. hmmm its at night here, maybe its cloudy outside. ill test tomorrow with both.
EDIT: sun just came up.... jds clean got a lock in 2 minutes. gonna try dharverys now.
EDIT: dharveys i retested, also took 2minutes. most unique looking rom yet, Vista-ish, but also a little laggy.
EDIT: ghettos didnt lock after 8m, i soft reset and didnt lock after 5m, unusual cause it locked so quick the first time i installed it last month and is my favorate rom... onto the next rom.
EDIT: OMJ's took about 6minutes. feels like forever when waiting this long hehe...
EDIT: now back to JD's clean rom... took about 5seconds. hmmm i wonder if the gps chip remembers where it was based on last roms data? i dunno switching between first few didnt seem that way.
EDIT: testing dharveys again... took about 5seconds.
I think ill settle with dharveys for now unless it does something i dont like...
dharvey had quite alot of preinstalled things and a lil tiny bit laggy. JDs is quick and clean, nothing inside.
I used dharveys: Verizon V1.0 24MB PP and JDs: 7-10-08.a.rar

My phone still searches for about 10-15 minutes to find service after a reboot. I've dialed *22899 and *228, 2 to update the phone, but it doesn't seem to help.

Everything seems ok besides that... but it shoudn't take THAT long to get service should it? My Apache would find a tower as soon as it got to the Today screen but this thing takes forever... :s

why not test with another persons rom? try ghettoryders or OMJ. GPS is a iffy with verizons. I assume you talking about Verizon phone service. i dunno, i never cooked, try another persons rom versus home cooked your first day haha ;)

Same thing with Ghettoryders 718... takes anywhere from 15-30 min to get a signal after the phone restarts. After that I have four bars of service and everything else seems smooth. I think something must have happened to my radio during the upgrade process and it's having troubles starting up.

EDIT: Same results with OMJ rom.

hmmmm what does the radio say in the Settings -> Device Info? is it 3.42.30?
can you reinstall the sprint leaked rom, and then right as green screen comes up, hard reset, then as green screen comes up again, activesync with computer and reinstall Ghetto's 715 rom right there (heard it was more stable).

Thank you very much for the updates sir! Can you please let me know what steps you have to take (if any) to make these completely verizon capable and functional. ex. mms included? tweaks? settings? It's better to let people know so we don't get "It doesn't work" comments by newbies :) Thanks again!

hey negaman, i didnt do anything.. just installed the roms, and then add at most Google maps and GpsViewer apps if they arent in Programs already to test. dharveys is a bit chunky i might go back to ghetto's since i backed up my settings or try putting all my programs on JDs clean rom. got a lock under dharveys driving around in about 3-4 minutes earlier today btw. i dont think it locked so quick when sitting in my pocket. had to put on dashboard facing sky possibly

This is awesome I was always hesitant to flash my device as a fear of bricking it. I am willing to install any program but anything that can kill the device is another thing. Could not have been easier (except trying to authenticate at 2:30am). I was so brave that I even decided to cook my own rom in BuildOS its extremly easy people click what you want and it creates it for you. Thans to the poster!

Re: Upgrading Tutorial For Verizon XV6900!!! Radio 3.42.30 with working GPS

Today, I followed Negamann's post, and flashed my xv6900 using the New Official Sprint ROM. I then applied OMJ's Verizon ROM. When I first ran the GPS Finder, it showed my GPS on COM 4, and my GPS seemed to be working. Now, when I run the GPS Finder, it states no GPS found.

Long story short... what program do you guys use to verify your GPS is working and to get the GPS to lock?

(sorry for the ignorance... I'm a newbie to the PPC world).

Thanks!

Re: Upgrading Tutorial For Verizon XV6900!!! Radio 3.42.30 with working GPS

I like gpsviewer. The link can be found in the tutorial. A soft reset fixes most issues due to a problem with the drivers when the phone goes to sleep. No fix for that as of yet, but I feel a fix coming soon!

Last Questiion ( I hope ). If I wanted to play with the PPCkitched and try some different ROMS, will I have to reauthenticate my phone again after each flash?

THANKS AGAIN NEGAMANN FOR ALL YOUR HELP! Enabling my vx6900 using your instructions was a piece of cake! You Da Man!! :headbang:

Those having trouble with the GPS connecting, I was having trouble as well took me from 3 am, when I finally got the curage, or beer brains to actually try this, till 7 PM. I walked out to my front porch stood there for 8 minutes just holding my device to the sky and running the HTC GPS app. Once it picked up the satelites I hit the END KEY, this kept that program running then I opened up Live search and picked right up on my location. Now I have GPS today running and I am sitting in my house typing this connected to 4 satelites. All I can say is be patient and make sure you have a clear area to get connected. Once that happens it should work great.

Where would I find this HTC GPS app? I have tried getting a lock with the GPS Viewer... but have been unsuccessful. (FYI: I am running OMJ's ROM, I like it the best so far). I'm looking foward to everyone posting a vote for the best ROM. Will make it much easier for us "newbies". :)

hmmmm store them in outlook contacts, so when u activesync it updates your phone, or u can set it so activesync can upgrade both i think (extras in phone upgrade outlook, extras in outlook upgrade the phone) but if u didnt set it up that way, u need to delete the connection from activesync and reestablish link, then it should ask you.

AE Button Plus $$$ + MVBKL: rerouted my never used camera button to go from 0-10 brightness everytime i press it. so can save power at lowest brightness levels but in sun outside i can never find anything on screen, so this helps me alot. can readjust other buttons if you want too.

Pocket Alarm: only clock program i tried where it overrode the default sound settings to wake me up. like i keep phone on silent/vibrate at work. but come home and forget to turn it back on and default alarms then wont wake me up next morning. sooo many settings, kinda confusing hehe, but just need to tweak a few. $$$

GPS toolkit: Google Maps, Gps Viewer,
Live Search, GPS Speed Sentry $$$ actually makes a sound when connection is gotten (errrr wish GPS Viewer would do that)... QuickGPS dont know if it actually works but i update it often. still is the weakest link in the phone. sometimes wont connect. sometimes 2 minutes is fine. always seems to work at home heh, and iffy when u reallly need it in another location.

Quick Menu and LargeStart Menu: the top leftest most side of screen opens a quick view/task manager which is useful. a lil to the right and get the big large start menu.

Random Access: find it easier to find contacts. just press vertical letter which contact u want. havent been able to get it into my Phone contacts. just regular Contacts shortcut. anyone know a way to get it 'into' Phone (so if goto Phone first, then hide Keypad, instead of seeing large list of contacts, u see the list but with Random Access). read a way to do it... didnt work.

SpriteBackup: make a backup of your programs/settings. so u can always reinstall the same rom and reinstate your progs/settings. $$$

Total Commander: for file explorerin', creating shortcuts, easily import .reg files, think it does ftp too

putty: so can do stuff with some websites with ssh login.

remote desktop: i dunno in case i need to log into my computer remotely lol, i dunno if this would even look good, would prob have to scroll like crazy.

PocketIRC: for talking on irc, although this constantly runs even when screen turned off, a battery killer :). keeps bugging me to register when start, maybe is free if u dont mind not registering? $$$

Internet Connection Sharing: just plug into my computer and bam, using that connection. Some roms have this working more than others.

fring: free IM program, good for what i provides, other people say Jivetalk beta is cool, but it dont work on alot of roms, so i settle for this.

Opera 9.5 and Opera Mini: i used 9.5 and liked the 'scrolliness' but cant seem to move via just the scrollbar. Make sure 9.5 has setting of Mobile View or everything looks small and crappy... Also been using Opera Mini more (free java app). heck i admit i use IE when i want something quick too.

some people who got in skyfire beta say thats cool. be on lookout for that browser

gmail java app: check my gmail, have it running in background usually. a lil annoying to reenter password everytime, and controls arent too great. but gets job done.

Windows Live: always on my Home screen to update hotmail email

other programs occasionally useful: facebook mobile app looks better than facebook website in a browser. TCPMP for watching vids with codecs MS prob cant handle although i never actually used TCPMP hehe. Yahoo GO 3 for catching up on news quickly. Some calculator skin cuase default calculator is ugly. office mobile eh never really use. adobe viewer, flash.

Simple Settings: usually turn off the Phone Keypad sounds, slows down phone dialing. add a song as my ringtone. add a few quick shortcuts in Menus settings. use the FULL QWERTY keyboard, sometimes the regular keyboard to type. Go into Today and turn off most Home items but HTC Home and Windows Live. Turn some Sound Notifications tweaked, like vibrate if missed call etc.

never really got MMS to work, but have Arcsoft installed in case i try again.

think i got a audio recorder.

tried S2U2, didnt like it so much, i like just quickly turning on my screen, no sliding. looks cool though hehe.[
