Yes you can still install them through a windows file explorer like you do now, or with user customization.

This tutorial is about adding files before you flash your new rom.

rstoyguy:

Did you ever figure out why we are not able to "edit" this ROM to our suiting? I've followed directions exactly but when I go to re-flash, I am stuck at the PPCKitchen screen and must reflash back to OMJ's original ROM. Thanks for your help in all this.

Re: How to Customize a Custom Rom: Adding/Removing Programs

I haven't really had a chance to look at it...I am reading what I can about the rom itself so when I get time on maybee sunday???? I will crank out a solution to the problem. Gotta be something with memory locations....The problem arose when:

1. I thought it was safe to release this...
2. The new altell rom+radio hit which screwed up my methods.

Or if someone else knows why dogguy's kitchen can't handle the new rom's...feel free to share!

I'm a n00b at this and am just getting the hang of flashing. I just loaded Ghetto's ROM and will try your methods on it. Will let you know what happens. As far as trouble shooting goes. I can try out your suggestions but am not capable of coming up with solutions on my own at this point.

Re: How to Customize a Custom Rom: Adding/Removing Programs

It seems that if you use this method with any ROMs based on the new SPRINT ROM you will get stuck on the boot screen.

I've tried without changing anything in the ROM (just prepit, buildos, and builtit) then flashed and got stuck.

Anyone else having the same issue?

ha ha ha lol the roms made with the ppcgeeks kitchen or any other kitchen other the the dogguy kitchen .... when you try to decompile them they will be missing the rgu files therefore creating "rom" bricks ........... the answer to this is to download the free ppcgeeks kitchen and ...... MAKE YOUR OWN ROM !!!!!!!!!!

This is why I prefer my method. So what you are saying is that once you use the kitchen, you can't change to any other rom? That is exactly why I don't use it. While I respect the ppckitchen, I prefer my own method.

Anyways folks, what I did was made a bare-bones rom from the ppckitchen, flashed it, then I was able to edit a BOOTABLE custom rom again. Here is the new base rom from old_man_jenkins that I used with the methods in the first & second posts and it worked fine.

OMJ.WM6.1.GPS.Sprint.NEW.Custom.exe

...and rgu/dsm files are in tact...

*sigh* no, that's not at all what he said and totally untrue. You really need a better understanding of what the tools are, what they do, and what they need to work. What he said is dogguy's tools aren't designed to work with the rom you are trying to turn into a kitchen.

Now what are you talking about? "...and then was able to edit a BOOTABLE custom rom"? I seriously doubt that flashing a kitchen rom to your ppc had anything to do with your ability to edit something! Did you mean "...and then was able to flash my custom rom and it would boot"? BTW, this sounds like an excellent example of why NOT to use the tools you are using.

Honestly, there are a lot of reasons to use buildos v2 and not ppckitchen's buildos, but they don't seem to apply to you. You'd be better served using ppckitchen's kitchens and tools instead of beating your head against the wall.

You might want to post in the ppckitchen forum, they can better assist you with your question.

You need to install .Net 2.0SP1 or later.

You use the RUU program (ROM Update Utility). It's part of the .exe that comes from the carriers, and is available in most kitchens and as an individual download.

Re: How to Customize a Custom Rom: Adding/Removing Programs

I ran PrepIt.bat on NFSFAN's latest rom as I would like to customize further. After that finished, as a test I ran BuildOS.exe and then BuildIt.bat. Everything completed properly as far as I can tell.

When I flash this ROM, looks like everything is fine... but for some reason I can't get some applications to work (and yes, they work in the donor ROM). In this case, when I try to run the camera application it says:

"The file 'Camera' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file."

So, all I did was dump and recook... no changes. So I have no clue why the camera app is no longer working... Any ideas?

I assume you grabbed the camera OEM out of a disassembled rom? Sometimes OEM's you take from another rom's \SYS folder are missing a couple of things.
1. If they were cooked with the ppckitchen, this strips out the needed RGU files.
2. All methods take the initflashfiles.txt and append it to the initflashfiles.dat file located in ..\OEM\OEM_Lang_0409 folder.
Somewhere there are some registry edits that also relax the security. But my bet is your missing the initflashfiles.txt file and files aren't getting copied to where they need to be.

According to above, you didn't add anything? Just broke it down and reflashed?

Correct, I didn't touch anything... so just took the donor .nbh put it with the Kitchen Tools... ran PrepIt.bat to break it down... and then recompiled... no changes to the dump.

The camera works on the donor .nbh but not on the recompiled version. :(

Happen to know what kitchen he used? It's a bell rom, I can download it and look at the components, but I won't be able to flash and test it.

Edit: which specific rom did you use? There are several on the ftp...

Not sure what kitchen he's using. The ROM I'm using is the Bell No Theme v1.05.

Well....here is what I see...
It's an old_man_jenkins base that has several OEM's from the new DIAMOND rom installed, and several ppcgeeks_oem.rar OEM's also installed. If you are having trouble with just the camera, delete "..\SYS\HTC Vogue Camera_5_07_30568_00" and search for a replacement camera OEM.

I ran into the same today, tried to slide in the Diamonds camera into my rom. In the process I deleted all the files out of ..\OEM\OEMAPPS that make the camera go. For me, I clean out the recycle bin when doing something like that so if it doesn't work, i can get the original files back...

Look for a replacement camera or ask in the ppckitchen thread why that version won't work, or look for tweaks to make it work.

I did try that already (delete out of SYS and add to OEM - I used the OEM from the PPCKitchen)... same thing. I'm going to try again now just in case I goofed on something.

What I don't understand is if (assuming) the ROM is deconstructed properly and had no changes, then rebuilt... why wouldn't it work? Confusing to me.

Ok, so I tried again... same result. What I did notice is that I do get security warnings (unknown publisher) alot with my cooked ROM. I don't remember seeing that with the original.

So, to make sure I understand, you did:

1. flashed rom, it worked.
2. took same rom, prepit.bat, buildos.exe, buildit.bat
3. flashed that same rom, no mods

and the camera stopped?

That's unusual if you didn't make any changes and it booted up fine...

100% Correct. I'm thinking this has something to do with the registry. When I try to take default.hv into the Hv Tools... convert to .txt... (make no changes)... and then back to .hv it fails. It's the first time using the hive tools so I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or if I'm onto why it's not working. Could some of the registry entries be getting lost in the decompile somehow?

.hv reconstruction error:
Failed to parse value name HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Apps\Shared!!!
InitRegistry FAILED in file ".\boot.rgu" within a few lines of line 11170.

... again, i made no changes to the entries. I just converted to text... added REGEDIT4 to the first line... saved as Unicode. Then tried to convert the .txt back to .hv.

If you want to do the same with the v1.05 rom (decompile, recompile) i'll be willing to flash it to see if it's just me somehow. I don't see the certificate security errors in the original ROM, so I'm thinking this could really be a certificate issue. I was looking at the registry entries for the security policy which is why i got into the hive tools.

There should be no need to mess with the registry. Buildos.exe builds the registry for you. If you want to add any registry settings, add them to an OEM then drop them into your kitchens OEM directory. You can use the OEM from my Adding personal files and other stuff tutorial. Add your registry entries into the oem's RGU file. I wouldn't edit the hv files directly.

I could do up another tutorial on "adding your custom registry settings to a rom". If there is any interest....

edit: and it is probably hanging on a binary value with an odd number of values. if you add the oem and add your entries to it, it will get past that problem, with no issues...

I was only in the registry stuff to try and diagnose the camera issue... either way I think that would be a great addition to your current tutorials!

I want to take NFSFAN's rom and update SqlCeMobile to SqlCeMobile35. This OEM is found in the vougue_WM6.1.rar\SYS not OEM. so what I did was replace SqlCeMobile with SqlCeMobile35 in the SYS folder under Kitchen. That was not in the instructions. I read that SqlCeMobile35 was needed to run skype. that is the only problem I had with NFSFAN's rom. I have a new nbh file, but being a n00b at this I am a bit paranoid about flashing it.

Has anyone tried something similair?

You have to use the kitchen whose link is provided in the first post. Anyways, When you decompile a rom, the components the chef added will be in ..\SYS. So, if you delete ..\SYS\SqlCeMobile, when you replace it, you will add the new SqlCeMobile35 into the ..\OEM directory. I'm not sure where your getting vougue_WM6.1.rar\SYS from...

Add --> ..\OEM directory.
Remove --> ..\SYS directory. :)

I got vougue_WM6.1.rar\SYS from ppc kitchen. The reason that I thought I could add it directly to the sys folder is because it was not in the OEM rar. and the format of the files in the OEM rar seemed a bit different.

Doesn't really matter I'm not going to mod this rom anymore, but I would like to get a better understanding of what is happening in the proccess.

It's quite a bit more fun if you disassemble a working rom and play with it. The rom I am running now is the latest sprint release 3.03. I don't notice any speed difference between that and I think the 19588 out of the kitchen. Well a little bit, but that's because I haven't stripped everything out of the 19208 release like the 19588 release for the ppckitchen. I still have touchflo and all that usefull, un-usefull stuff! :)

In the OEM's that you added after running PrepIt.bat, there is a syntax error in one of the RGU files, or one of the RGU files doesn't have the blanks at the end of the RGU. The RGU files contain the registry entries for the OEM. I think in the temp dir you can check the log.txt file and it will tell you which OEM, and which line...

The last few lines give it away.
The last package processed was "RC Mod" (your regedits???)
And it failed on the setting your today keys...#112. Somewhere around line 25...

Can you post the RGU contents of that OEM? As long as the guid is ffffffff-e444-4cd2-*? I can help you narrow it down....

do the GUID's match? Er, the filenames? Whichever RGU has that regedit for the today keys in it.

Look in the other folders inside ..\kitchen\OEM and see if you can find an RGU & DSM file with the above fffff-* filename in the previous post....That is the offending OEM...
