HTC TP not a good music player?

A while back my car stereo head unit got jacked. For a while I had nothing but amps and speakers in my car but no tunes. So I had some free time, bought some adapters and set the whole thing up to play music from my phone. I plug in my phone, play the music on my phone and it lines into my amplifiers and there we are.

Problem is that it sounds like crap. My system sounded awesome before so I have to blame the phone. There is some weird flange like wang to the voices and highs, makes them sound unnatural. The highs all sound lispy. It's just a mess, not enjoyable. I've played with all the gains, tried different winmo music players. tried a software eq on the phone, nothing.

Is there anything I can do? Can I expect this out of any hand held music player? Will an ipod do a better job for me?

I like the convenience of not having a stack of CD's but I can't keep this up.
