SMS Lag Fix!
3 Attachment(s)
Unlike all of the other fixes that are aimed at the keyboard I did some playing around with "thread_sms.htm" in the windows folder. There's an arguement in there called "count" which calls some function that calculates the characters in the message after every letter. Removing this arguement stops tmail from calculating the character count thus eliminating the keyboard lag.
IF SOMETHING BREAKS JUST DELETE THREAD_SMS.HTM AND WINDOWS WILL RECREATE IT. I have attached the HTM that I modified in case you don't want to do the editing yourself. Summary: Open Total Commander Browse to the Windows folder Look for "thread_sms.htm" Hit file and go to edit Scroll down (it's pretty short so it shouldn't be that far) and look for "count" then delete it. It's the only one in there so no need to worry about deleting the wrong one. Save and restart the phone. Enjoy! Some of you wanted to see what I actually modified and where count was in the htm file. Code:
<html XMLNS:Inbox> Update - 17/06/09 I made another change to compose_sms.htm that gets rid of the _______ 0/130 display. It's just a blank window now and doesn't look like a broken counter was just placed there. Here's my compose_sms.htm Code:
<html XMLNS:Inbox> They are highlighted in green for ease of finding. Alternatively you could just delete everything in between those comment tags for the same effect. I left it in there in case I wanted to add a little signature or logo or something. Also added the attachment for compose_sms.htm -Side note: I've done alot of flashing and I found that if you don't hard reset right after replacing or if you have SMS open it doesn't completely overwrite it and corrupts it a little. Make sure to reset right after replacing so windows doesn't have time to try to replace it (which is why I think it breaks). fr0st was kind enough to make up a cab, I attached it to this post. |

Re: SMS Lag Fix!
Oh sweet, so it just doesn't update the "X/160" figure while you type, and so doesn't slow you down as much?
Interesting find. |
Re: SMS Lag Fix!
Yeah it's unfortunate that you lose the character count but my texts are usually short anyways. If I could figure out where count is I might be able to mess around in that function to maybe find some unecessary code. Kind of the same way MS Word publishes to HTML *Shutters*

Regardless, I'd like to try this but I need the count! |
Re: SMS Lag Fix!
good find.. really the only reason I see for caring about the count is twitter, but we got apps for that anyway.
if I get long winded, what do I care if it gets split into multiple txt's. |
Re: SMS Lag Fix!
I am very interested in this development. I have noticed a few different things when in the SMS window.
Not only do we have character count, but on some roms you can actually see the box resize after every letter. The scroll bar will adjust and it seems to "scan" the area texted to see if it has to move down. I think if maybe this could be manipulated in a way to only happen after every 5 or ten characters, we might have faster texting. I need the character count, as I tweet from sms and i hate to send 2 messages to friends that dont have unlimited texts when I could just send them one. I am definitely interested in this thread. Maybe we should send an email to No2Chem? He's incredibly good at finding little things like this (eg: keyboard backlighting). |
Re: SMS Lag Fix!
it would be really nice as some of you have said already to have the character count still there but update less frequantly
|
Re: SMS Lag Fix!
anybody tried this? seems really cool...if it actually worked
|
Re: SMS Lag Fix!
I'm on 6.5 and my thread_sms.html doesn't have just a "count" it has a lot, lol...
Could you possibly post an example? I don't want to delete the wrong thing, haha.. Thanks, -Corey |
Re: SMS Lag Fix!
yea, I think posting that htm would be helpful. I stayed up wayy too long last night looking into this on msdn and didn't get around to trying. now I gotta work.

I've attached the htm file that I modified. Just replace the file in \windows\
Of course back it up first in case this is something that's carrier specific. (which I doubt but just in case.) |
Re: SMS Lag Fix!
So far I like the fix, I do miss the character count but the lag drives me nuts!! I'm willing to sacrifice the count for the decreased lag. Good Find!!! I might look into trying to tweak it a lil where it keeps the count but only counts when you stop typing for say 2 seconds or so, then once you stop and it counts the characters used you won't have lag, and you will have a count, sounds genius!!!
|
Re: SMS Lag Fix!
would be awesome if it would re-count after you stop typing for 1-2 seconds, as previously mentioned. But still, great find!

Re: SMS Lag Fix!
Thanks for the fix!! I never cared about the character count whatsoever and this along with the SPJ cab completely removed lag from my texting!

Re: SMS Lag Fix!
thanks, this works.
I also use the SPJ cab, don't know if that added to this fix, but no more lag! :D |

after using your cab.. threaded sms text in wm6.5 don't show up anymore.. |
Re: SMS Lag Fix!
Might have to change SMS back to threaded. Should be under system in settings. Not sure if all ROMs have it. Hopefully someone has more luck than me with tweaking count to only count after you stop typing.

Re: SMS Lag Fix!
thanks gonna try this today.

Re: SMS Lag Fix!
Hmm, this didn't do anything for me. I tried editing the file myself, and also replacing the file with the one in the thread, soft resets between each, and nothing. Same lag, and it still counts. Anyone else had this just... not work?

Re: SMS Lag Fix!
for this to work you need to be using the standard sms program (\windows\tmail.exe) in threaded mode
EDIT: also be sure to soft reset |
Re: SMS Lag Fix!
I have found that if you open your keyboard and let the screen change to landscape mode first then open up your text messages the lag NEVER happens it just happens when you have text messaging open then open your keyboard. Then the lag happens. This littel adjustment works for me er time.

Re: SMS Lag Fix!
I know it shows to delete this from the "thread_sms.htm", I also deleted it from "thread_sms.ht", I'm not sure what the difference is but I went ahead and got rid of "count" on both them and it works flawlessly for me.

Re: SMS Lag Fix!
Just go to the \Windows Directory and delete the file. Soft reset and it'll be back to normal
|
Re: SMS Lag Fix!
did you put the file in the first post back in windows and soft reset?
|
Re: SMS Lag Fix!
Yep i did.....
i got it working again Thnx to deleting the file then soft reseting... Thnx... |
Re: SMS Lag Fix!
I backed up my file to SD card.
I edited the file as noted in the OP. Soft Reset. Messaging would open, but when I tapped a conversation or started a new one, it would just show me the messaging app with the OK button and the title bar at the top of the screen (but I could not see the top fields and the message area in the bottom). I reverted back to my backup from SD and soft reset (which didn't work) so I deleted the file and soft reset and I'm back to normal. Did anyone else have this issue? EDIT: I did try the files that were uploaded here, but they yielded the same results as when I edited the file myself. Running MightRom4 Final (6.20.09). |
Re: SMS Lag Fix!
I wonder if Windows 6.1 has a different count function than 6.5 does... Well I got a new phone today finally so I'll be flashing until I find one I like. Maybe I'll play with that Mighty ROM and see if it breaks for me.
Edit: I just flash mighty 4 that was made on the 20th of June and when I removed count from the htm file it works fine for me. Are you using threaded or classic style SMS? I can't seem to replicate your problem. |
