Touch Pro keyboard not working (lights up, but no input)! PLEASE HELP!?
 

Hello All,

I have a touch pro, roughly 5-6 months old. The phone has been babied for the most part, has a screen protector and in a case. I have dropped it maybe 2 times, and both time onto carpet. Last week, out of the blue, the keyboard stops working. It still lights up, but the phone does not accept input from it. I have pulled the battery, and used the reset button on the bottom of the phone, and sometime that makes the keyboard work again... but it always stops working withing 2-3 hours. Anyone have any idea what the problem might be? I am really trying to avoid paying $100 for a new one for this issue. I am thinking it might be a problem with the software? Anyone have any reccomnedation to fully reset the phone?

I had that problem once, with one of the ROMS that I installed on my phone. I did a Hard Reset. (thats the one that you need to be an octopus to perform. power button, volume down button, Okay button, and reset with the stylus all at he same time) And after I did all that,(and realized that I am actually double jointed) I didnt have the problem anymore.

This post has come up a dozen times on half a dozen forums.

The Touch Pro Keyboard is very flakey. The Keyboard is covered under Warranty which as of April 09, Sprint honors in store. You do not need TEP for this; nor need to pay anything out of pocket.

Back Up your Touch Pro, bring it to a sprint store, and they will either repair the keyboard or give you a refurbished phone.

I account this issue to the connector between the keyboard and the phone unit overheating; as the phone achieves temperatures that can render other pieces of its hardware unusable. However both HTC and Sprint deny any real product flaw.

P.S. If you aint double Jointed you could also try, Clicking on Start, Settings, System, and clicking on ClearStorage. type in 1234 and click yes. that brings it back to factory specs for the most part.

It is usually hardware related. A guy had some luck in another thread just like this by taking off battery cover, sliding phone open, and pushing the space bar very hard. He said like you thought it might be too hard. Don't break it, that would be counterproductive, and I am not responsible for what you do to your phone, but another guy tried it on his bad kb phone and he had luck with it also. If mine quits again I'm going to try it.

This may be from phone getting hot. Get a new phone or fix yours as stated above, unlock, and get a radio that doesn't run so hot.

Yea, most people have no luck with a hard reset, or they have luck only to find out it was just working at the time. It will go in and out sometimes.

I just called my local sprint store, and asked them if they can cover/repair the problem. They told me that any warranty on the phone it thru HTC and they do not cover it... FML

Well there is always the Bully Technique. Go into a Sprint store, (when its really full) and talk to the techs about the keyboard. Explain that it is a known hardware issue, and that you need this rectified. It especially helps if you are one of their "Premier" Customers. If they refuse to help you at first, get Loud enough that all the new customers in the store can hear you, but not Loud or obnoxious enough that they call the police. Exclaim that you are shocked after being a customer for so long that they would treat a customer this way with a known issue. And how you wonder if they would treat someone that has already paid tons of money to them, just how horrible they will treat people that haven't even earned them money yet. If customers start walking out of the store, you have done your job right, and probably will find that they will exchange it for a refurbished model so they don't lose customers that are deciding whether or not to even spend their money. I did this once back when I had a Samsung Instinct. It worked.

Yea, it didnt help either. I took the phone into a sprint store, and since the phone wasnt too old they said it is covered under the phones warranty... They ordered me a refurbished TP and i picked it up 2 days later.

Cool, someone else tried and said it fixed. I was hoping it would work. Update to a new radio that doesn't get hot so you don't have the problem again (hopefully).

I totally agree that it is a heat problem. I have it daily. I have tried different ROMs, radios, hard and soft resets and still have the issue. I just open the keyboard and turn it off for a minute. Then the keyboard comes back. I don't feel like installing the stock ROM to go and fight with Sprint. I know it will be fine when I get there.

I am using Sprint Radio 1.11 and Energyrom 3.0 (an AWESOME ROM) =D>!

i had this problem and now i have a htc paperweight... it doesnt turn on anymore it just vibrates...BUT if you hold in the reset button its fully functional anmd guess what THE KEYBOARD WORKS wtf is going on with my tp can anyone figure out how the reset button is allowing the phone to turn on, but the sec i let go it shuts down???

Going into a Sprint store and screaming and yelling may not be the best option. I would do everything in my power to NOT help you if it was me. Call customer service if you want to be an A-hole. You can check with a repair store to see if it can be fixed. Which in this case my guess would be "No" but, they can still order a replacment phone if it's not damaged and still under warranty or you have TEP. You can also log onto your Sprint.com account, go to store finder and self repair option. This will allow you to order a replacement phone that is sent directly to you without being hastled by anyone in a store. If your phone's wet when they get it (or damaged in any other way) you will get charged full replacement cost. If your worried check with a Sprint store to see if it's covered. Sprint is and should be honoring the manufactures warranty in store and be able to replace it at no cost.

you got screwed.
The keyboard issue is covered by the manufacturing warranty,
which warrants the right to a NIB replacement. (New In Box)
It even says so in the actual manufacturing warranty.
Ridiculousness.

It worked for me for a while.
but then when the ribbon most have fully popped out,
it doesn't work.
I think it only works if it's like half in/half out.

Where did you see this? I can't find anything on this.

My keyboard on my 2nd TP died today. Did the spacebar fix and it worked. Not sure how long it will last though.

Called the "local" repair centers... "We don't have the parts. We only replace them." Don't want a replacement. Want my phone with my invisible shield on it working.

My TP keyboard hasnt worked at all!!! for months and I just tried this fix and wahlaah!!! Awesome. I just turned my phone off took the batt cover off and pressed hard on the space bar on the slideout keybrd held it for a minute and did it a cpl times pressing firmly but not too hard to brk it obviously... replaced cover turned on and Bam it works once again... Nice

Wow, I can't believed this actually worked for me. I was reading it and started thinking how stupid it sounded, but to my surprise...wallahhhh. ..magic.. it works..

Just so you know sprint phone tech support walked me thru reprogramming my phone to fix my keyboard, which it did, but only worked for a few hours.

Yes pressing space button also works for me
first it's only last for few minute
then i try again, its only can hold for few minute again
then I try a bit longer pressing the space button, and then it's work almost few hours now without trouble
i will wait few day to make sure it's already fixed
my friend said that under the pad they have some flex cable that sometimes problem

dont know if u ever drop ur phone but the keyboard has a plug and if it rattled loose this is an easy fix. only if you are not under warranty and dont have insurance...otherwise do not try this at home.

I thought i would have to go out and spend money on a touch pro 2 or touch diamond but that simplistic keyboard thing worked!!

I've tried everything on mine, but I can't manage to get my Touch Pro KB to work anymore. I've opened it up and reconnected all the ribbon cable, but nothing. I would have no problem replacing the keyboard if I had one to use, but the only ones you can find are on ebay for about $40 a piece with no guarantee they even function. Also, does anyone know if there is a difference between the form factor of a Sprint Touch Pro Keyboard and a AT&T?

Most people who talk about this simply give up and exchange with the carrier, but I have a non-standard contract situation and can't perform a simple return. Any replacement phone will have to come out of pocket, and be a complete nightmare to activate.

If anyone here has a busted phone, but a functioning keyboard I'd be very interesting in taking it off your hands.

Make sure phone is off. Okay button, volume down, then power. That's it. 2 hands, 3 fingers, 0 stylus. That's it.

I have the same problem with my htc tp i tried the space bar but it didnt work i bought it used so no coverage I also tried the hard reset and had to pay again to have it flashed to cricket any other sugestion this lady at cricket told me that she could replace it for $35 but it does turn on, the lady that i bought it from said that it happened to her she took it to a friend suppossedly there is a ribbon that comes lose under the space bar that is why sometimes pressing hard helps but i guess not always

Yep, me too. I was supposed to go back into the store in 5 days to swap out for a refurbed replacement, but I don't want another- I want the one I have to work. The spacebar fix will hopefully get me through until the Windows Mobile 7 devices are known and available so that I can make an informed decision on what to get next. Thanks to all who've contributed to this thread!

listen if you take the back of the phone off and take the 4 screws out dissasemble the keypad bacl\k where the battery is. dont rip off the connection bands or your screwed, you will see 3 diffrent gound tabs under the keyboard usualy they are bent too far down not makeing contact from pressing hard on the keys. bend them back up so when you put it all back together they will touch the back side of the plates. fixed my girls phone try it and let me know if it worked for you

Did the Space bar trick and when I tried to turn my phone back on the screen quit working. Did a hard reset and now my screen is working again but still no luck on the keyboard. :/
