Whoa, danger indeed.

Maybe your back pocket was rough and caused lots of friction on the battery, enough perhaps to make it asplode.

Yea I need to know the answer to that million dollar question too... Was this an OEM HTC battery or one from fleebay(eBay)?

They actually are HTC batteries. I was able to keep batteries when I got new replacement phones.
