What ROM are you running and why?

Trying to decide which ROM to flash to among the many great ROMs out there. I was curious as to which ROMs ppl use and why?

I have not seen a real good review thread yet (I know there are some out there, but nothing from users as to why they picked the ROM they're running).

Need help deciding b/c I'd only like to flash once. Hard resetting after each flash would be a royal pain.

*Any Custom ROM* with SASHIMI (www.winmo-experts.com) will get rid of your 'which ROM should I flash to woes'. I'm currently using a custom ROM that I made and it is fast, stable and using all the software that I want it to. Check out ppckitchen.org and get cookin!

I have not heard of the SASHIMI yet. What the h**l is that? Did you cook your own ROM? As a noob, I'm quite impressed if you did.

SASHIMI is like UC (User customization) but a lot more user friendly IMHO. Check out the videos. http://www.youtube.com/view_play_lis...FC86B36CB817D8

Yea, he probably did cook his own rom. The PPCKitchen is very user friendly. My first custom was a kitchen rom. Now I stick with mighty mike. I did a review on it yesterday actually, here...

MightyROM ALL THE WAY(: i'm currently using MightyROM5, wanted a change from TF3D and WM6.1 (MR5 Has it built in tho) loving WM6.5 tried other 6.5 ROMs and MR is the most stable and fastest I've tried, also if you are looking for a WM6.1 ROM go with MightyROM4.16 very stable and fast.

I'm considering the 4.16 ROM b/c I have been following the MR5 thread & it looks to me like its not as stable as the older one.
But if the MR5 does not use TF3D does it use a different type of screen that's like TF?

Re: What ROM are you running and why?

MightyROM5 for a few days now, seeing if it "works for me". I use Titanium rather than TF3D. It's growing on me, but I really wish I could make the font smaller so more things would show on the home screen.

What I really like about 6.5 is "dismiss all" notifications. That alone makes it worth the switch for me, as having to dismiss a missed call, voicemail, text, and email notification at the same time on 6.1 takes half an hour and makes me want to crawl in a dark hole in despair.

Pretty much everything else seems to work really well. The new start menu is growing on me, since it's a quick way to the apps list. Presumably as this stuff matures we'll be able to actually position apps where we want rather just than "move to top". I like the single-screen flick scrolling; no more overscroll.

Oh, and it's fast.

Thacounty's review is helpful, you should read it, though I disagree with the battery edit he posted recently. Mine is not a battery hog, so I suspect some rogue process (which has happened to me on EVERY WM device I have ever used at some point or another). Last week on the stock ROM my phone got really hot in my pocket, and when I finally noticed the battery had drained to 20% in about an hour. Same with memory leaks - I have never had a WM phone that didn't need basically a daily soft-reset to stay reliable. And I've used quite a handful of WM phones over the years.

Re: What ROM are you running and why?

I'm running Silence roms final 6.1 version.. Silence rom 9 was the best rom I've ran so far it had my battery lasting 2 days instead of 4 to 6 hours... so i figured i'd give the finale 6.1 version a try.. i think i'll go back to 9 untill some thing 6.5 that is strong comes my way.

I may remove the post about the battery. Sometimes my batteries just don't like to stay charged. If they go dead in 3 hours again though I will keep it! And yea, I understand a daily soft reset, usually I do about 6, but it shouldn't be running at 48% should it? I never had a mogul but wasn't that their problem? MR5 is great and I like it, I hope the battery lasts longer today. Of course I won't be texting near as much because I won't be in class hahaha. I also forgot to mention that I was out of service for about an hour and a half and from what I can tell that is bigger battery drainer than having wifi and bluetooth on together. Glad my review was helpful.

Silencerom9 Final here...best I've used for battery life, stability, and features. Make a few mods here and there and it's pretty much perfect. Run's like a well greased swine at 256MHz via nueDynamic (clocking down to 81MHz in suspend). Don't even get me started on stock clock...WOW!

I know the battery thing is maddening. My Apache used to do it *constantly*. The phone would get hot and the battery would drain as if someone put a fork() inside a while (1) loop or something. Being in poor coverage will kill you, no question about it. I wouldn't attribute it to the ROM just yet though. Especially because of:

6 daily soft-resets...you have a software issue I think. I use MightyROM5, PocketShield, and not a whole lot else running all the time (I'm a strict business user, no fluff). For RAM, I'm not sure; according to my quick menu I have calendar, file explorer, and outlook open and I'm at 39%. That's perfectly normal. If the WM 6.5 slide to unlock feature worked properly I'd skip PocketShield in favor of it, but when I use devicelock it makes the 6.5 unlock slider come up twice which is really annoying.

Hope I didn't take this thread off topic; given the time thacounty put into writing that review I figured it would be worth responding. It's nice to see people who care and take the time to put their thoughts down. To the OP, mightyROM5 is worth trying. I think you need to identify your *immediate* deal-breakers carefully (I was one of the few who had constant 5-second freezes on juicy7 - even after two flashes and hard-resets), then find the ROMs that meet your needs and stay with them for a few days while you get used to the new interfaces. I hated 6.5 at first but I'm getting used to Titanium and now I'm actually pretty happy with the start menu functionality. There are quirks (like having to go back to square one every time you make a control panel change and get back to settings) but once you get your phone set up they don't really interfere with daily operation.

I am sort of leaning towards the 4.16 ROM. It would be great to cook my own, just not sure I'm that good yet. And when you cook your own, where does the Office Mobile programs come from?

Might ROM 5 (WM 6.5 with TF3D) just switched from Mighty ROM 4.16 (based off WM 6.1)
-speed, stability, and battery life like all the Mighty ROMs

I was on Mighty 4.16 for about a month and liked it then one day my battery just started dying. I switched to MR5 and it only got worse. I'm flashing back to 4.16 this weekend. IMO nothing is better about WM6.5 than 6.1, I was really hoping the keyboard lag would go away. Okay I lied, the pinwheel in 6.5 is much nicer.

There is a definite keyboard lag in MR5. That's why Might 4.16 will be hard to beat.

Is that a hint that something new is coming???
Also, are all the apps, ect., that are loaded into the ROM listed on the first page of the thread? And how do you get the Office programs into the ROM are they built in?

Re: What ROM are you running and why?

I have tried, Juicy, Tried Psyki, and now I am trying Copper-

I gave up on the TF3D, the Stock sprint rom is/was pretty decent, but there were still some bugs, so I bucked down and have grown to like 6.5 in the last 24 hours. no TF3d just the new 6.5 interface, and its working very well.

One question I had, is there a minimalistic 6.1 rom like Copper? No TF3D , just basic roms? if I decide to dump copper - doesn't look like i will be - but if I could find one that would be what I want to try next

What I'm also trying to find out is why ppl like a particular ROM. Is it the speed, the apps, theme, or what?

For me It is speed and stability and no bugs-
What bothered me about the stock rom is that sometimes Messaging would refuse to open - Text or email - it would just refuse to open

With some of the other roms, the speed was there, but it would still need to be soft reset every so often, apps appeal to some people, but you can find cabs for whatever you are looking for so that isnt the selling point.

anyway just my $.02

That's sort of what I'm looking for, and ur right, you can get apps lots of places. But there must be something about these custom ROMs that make them more desirable than the stock roms which I had thought were "stable" if not so speedy! No?

I use the 6.5 Copper Rom, the joint project by Juicy and Mighty, i like the Cleanliness of the rom and that it has no Manilla. ive only added the Cabs i use and therefore am very happy with my setup. For me it has been Fast and very stable. i guess ive been one of the lucky ones to not experience some of the other bugs members were finding. all in all i probly wont switch out of copper till theres another Clean 6.5 Rom out. IMHO.

Same for me...tried Juicy, Mighty 4.16, Psyki, and Silence 9. I liked Silence 9 the best, but wanted to see how a newer 6.5 ROM handles battery life. So as of last night I'm on Copper and loving it. No TF3D, but the 6.5 interface works well. I think I'll be on Copper for a while. I really don't want to constantly switch ROMs...to each their own, but to me it's a pain in the *** to get everything setup over and over again. I've just been switching until I find something that will work for me. So far Copper is it. Haven't run into any bugs, it's fast, and most importanly at nearly 2pm I still have 70% battery life left!!!! I used to be on the charger by 2 or 3pm! That alone is worth using Copper going forward.

I thought I was the only one left running stock. :) I am curious about 6.5 and tf3d2 but until I hear that something REALLY stable that works with all the sock sprint stuff is out I won't take that plunge.

when you say there is no TF3D, then that means there's no "finger scrolling" or touch screen capability? Does that mean there's a different method to maneuver through screens, etc?

Re: What ROM are you running and why?

I just cooked my first recently...and I have to say...its a lot more simple than it sounds. But first ROMs...I ran two different ROMs for sometime...I started with Y4J's Clean ROM's...lovely, fast, clean, and stable. Then I switched to KK's loaded...from 1.5 to 2.0. His ROM's are truly LOADED...but still fast and stable.

Now, I have that happy medium of cooking my own. Two kitchens that I found easy and simple to use. Calkulin's and eRice's. cooking a ROM is pretty simple. both these kitchens has step by step prompts. You get to pick the "programs" / OEM's cooked into the ROM.

Download a kitchen and just check it out without burning the ROM onto your phone...you'll see :headbang:

TouchFlo 3D (TF3D) is the User Interface that HTC put ON TOP of Windows Mobile 6.1. There are plenty of other different kinds of interface out there...SPB Mobile Shell 3.0 to name one. It's just different ways to interface(act) with your device. Most of these UI apps out there are finger scolling friendly. Windows Mobile 6.5 (the "upgrade" to the current O/S) has a finger scolling user interface built in called (Titanium)

TF3D is the User Interface, even if you disable TF3D and use the regular today screen, you would still have "finger-scrolling".

it loads fine for me...I used your links...check and see if its not your browser giving you problems...

build numbers signifies if its WM 6.1 or WM 6.5...someone pls correct me if I'm wrong...

I suggest you try out the 6.1 kitchens first...and be patient. Esp when you get down to the TF3D customization choices. Remember to just select one if it only requires one. Also, when you have the kitchen and unzipped it.

You will want to choose the option "BuildOS" when you have it up...and don't let the about of content in the zip fiel scare you...it all works

I like Juggalo's ROM because he took the extra time to cater to Sprint people while he was on Telus. You won't find things like the sprint music store not working, no update profile/update prl in settings, the phone not being registered as a SPRINT branded diamond on powerdeck/other websites.

And the WM 6.1 build he uses is flawless.

EDIT: I'm currently using Calkulin's kitchen to cook my own ROMs as Juggalo has not made an update to his Diamond ROM in quite some time.

I didn't know Calkulin had made a Touch Pro kitchen. In that case I HIGHLY recommend Calkulin's kitchen if you want a minimalistic ROM. I built a minimalistic ROM with it and couldn't be happier. I built my ROM without TF3D/Manila or the HTC Dialer incase I decide to install either later I can. And since neither are cooked in, you get extra space and you don't have to worry about overwriting manila/dialer ROM files if you ever wanted to switch, just uninstall your current, install a new one and you're good to go.
