Phone as Modem - URGENT
I'm currently on hold with sprint. I need to use my phone as a Modem so I can do my police reports on the go.
I currently have unlimited data, but was advised that I needed to add sprints new pricing 15$/mo phone as modem data pack Questions the tards on the phone could not answer: 1. How fast will this be going? Would I be better off with a data card?... 2. What software am I going to need to install on the computer to get it to work 3. Can I use this phone as a GPS unit for Microsoft Street & Trips 2009 Please and thank you. |

Add:
I just got off the phone with sprint, and they advised me that my plan "Unlimited Data Shared 1500" won't allow them to add the 15$ feature to my account. The sprint rep advised that I should try it, and see if it works with just my data plan. Can anyone advise. |

Re: Phone as Modem - URGENT
get the internet sharing fix for your phone and you then have a selection choice of phone as a modem or sprint. chose sprint and you wont have to get a separate data plan. choosing sprint uses your phones internet connection and sprint thinks your surfing the web on your phone so you wont get charged. just search for internet sharing fix and follow the directions

Re: Phone as Modem - URGENT
I'm using MightyROM5
I just noticed, there is an additional option I can choose, when I connect the phone to the computer. "Phone as Modem" - I don't know what hacks are pre-installed on my phone, but based on the information provided, do you think I'm set to go? I disabled my Cable Modem, and used the phone. So far, I'm getting internet!!! Please advise before I get a 4000 phone bill lol. Thanks. -W |

Re: Phone as Modem - URGENT
phone as modem costs waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more. You need to use the sprint connection or they'll know you're tethering. Currenty on sprint, there is no limit for data usage on the PHONE connection, only on the phone as modem data connection. Be careful about this.

Re: Phone as Modem - URGENT
I used to tether with my vogue, I used a program called PDANet. It's from www.junefabrics.com or .net .org... and it worked well. The only thing I noticed is that when you receive a call and are tethered, you usually have to call them right back as it doesn't connect well. This program will "hide" the fact that your tethering, there is a reg hack out as well that hides it and they are included in my sprint roms. I'm not 100% sure, but a "general" rom for all carriers such as mighty's may not have the sprint-specific hack in it.

Re: Phone as Modem - URGENT
I use WMwifirouter on my Sprint TP activated on my Verizon account every day.
I use it to tether my 2nd gen ipod touch for inet browsing as it is so much more enjoyeable to use for that than any of the WinMo options. I don't go crazy with it & have never had an extra data charge (I have unlimited data) for that. ~John |
Re: Phone as Modem - URGENT
You have 3 options for the connection type for tethering:
-Bluetooth -Wifi (wmwifirouter) -usb Bluetooth will be slow (in my tests it was capped at around 300mbps) Speed of wifi and usb is similar... in EVDO Rev A coverage I typically get 1500mbps Using Wifi will drain your battery pretty quickly... the phone has to run both the EVDO data connection and the wifi radios. When I use this setup the phone warms up pretty good and if it gets too hot it will stop charging if it's on the charger. If you are just connecting for a short period of time this is a really convenient way to go. USB will give you the best battery life... it will charge via the usb cable (may drain your laptop battery though). The phone will heat up but not as much as when using wifi. I can't think of many situations to use bluetooth. Either wifi or usb are better options IMHO. |
Re: Phone as Modem - URGENT
In the internet sharing app choose USB (faster than bluetooth) as your PC connection and "sprint" as your Network Connection
I use this setup (along with bluetooth occasionally) and haven't had any issues on my billing... simply everything shared plan. |
Re: Phone as Modem - URGENT
What does tethering mean?
I'm using USB as connection, but Vista installs the drivers, and connects it right away. Am I set to go? --- When it comes to technology, things needs to be explained to me twice, in noob format. I'm sorry. |
Re: Phone as Modem - URGENT
Unless anyone says otherwise,
I'm going to install this PDANet 2.0 on my computer and work it that way. According to what everyone said on that website and I quote: "**** Verizon, and Sprint's 15$/mo tethering package." - I gotta say, I agree. |
Re: Phone as Modem - URGENT
You don't need any 3rd party software. Internet sharing works just fine

I have to admit I don't end up using it all that often, but it's been nice the couple of times I only need to get to my gmail and leave. |

If that is the case, when you connect your PC via USB your TP asks how you want it to connect, whether it be for ActiveSync, External Drive or Internet Sharing ("phone as modem"). Pick the third option and your fine. |
Re: Phone as Modem - URGENT
Whyy did someone earlier say that using phone as modem is more expensive? Using MR5 going into the INternet Sharing program, selecting USB and Phone as Modem will not charge extra as it thinks its the phone using the data, correct?
I just do not want to be charged extra. |
Re: Phone as Modem - URGENT
"Phone as modem" is the sprint plan add-on that allows you to tether a phone to a pc. On most phones you would need to add this option to your plan to be able to tether your PC to your phone.
However, on windows mobile phones you can basically tap into the unlimited data plan on the phone by applying the internet connection sharing hack... in which case you only need to pay for the unlimited data plan, not the phone as modem plan. |

Don't know if this link was posted on this thread already but this solution works. I've used it without problems. |
Re: Phone as Modem - URGENT
Here you go, go here, and install the cab. This will force Data and not allow Phone as Modem to show up. So Sprint will be none the wiser. Saving you lots of $$ haha. Crooked cops, awesome! Haha. Hey bro if you pull me over you have to let me go now ;) haha jk. It isn't mine. Thank the guy who made it.

Hello,
I am trying to connect my Laptop to the internet . I am using MR5 and connecting a USB cable from my TP to the laptop which has Vista on it. it keeps giving me an error saying something about Generic RNDIS can not be located. is there a way to get by this somehow??? Thanks for any help :)) |
Re: Phone as Modem - URGENT
As far as the gps question goes, theres a program called gpsgate that will allow you to "share" your gps in the phone with a computer http://www.gpsgate.com/index.php

Honestly I'd just get wmwifi router. Its a really awesome program that lets you turn your sprint data into wifi. I've put up to 8 gigs onto my bill and haven't paid a dime for it yet. When you get the everything plan they should give you everything, but in case they don't there's always a way around it. |
Re: Phone as Modem - URGENT
I dont see what the fuss is all about. Maybe I miss read something here but using your phone as a modem doesnt cost alot.. infact it doesnt cost me anything. When you do it, it takes away from your minuets (ex. if you had free nights n weekends then you would get free internet). I just pay for the unlimited everything plan which is 99$ (think about it. if you get have a phone bill for about 60 a month then a data card for another 60? no thanks)
only thing I had to do was plug it in. works on any computer I ever tried it on. Same thing when I had the Touch and the Mogul. no drivers or anything. Vista users should have the mobile device center installed but other than that, your good to go. as for how fast is it? Im in the military and I take it with my laptop when we goto the field (middle of the woods mind you) and I wont have one bar on my touch. it goes from none (still in service) to one bar and its .60 mb DL. Here back in the "real world" lol if I have 2 bars I get around 1.8 MB download speed and full service I get about 2-3 mb. upload speed BLOWS but IDC about that. another thing I noticed is that on my TP, my internet sharing worked works way better with Mighty ROM 4.13-4.16. kinda sucked when I had the stock rom on there |

nah your good man. it takes away minuets from what sprint told me but I have unlimited everything so Im good on that aspect. even when I didnt have unlimited plan, I never noticed my minuet usage go down when I used it. |
Re: Phone as Modem - URGENT
I pay $45 for my phone plan and unlimited data plan. No way I'm going to jump up to a $100 plan. That would cost me $660 more per year.

Re: Phone as Modem - URGENT
I have no problem sharing my internet via sprint network on my laptop running vista, I am having problems using when trying to share with windows EP. In the system hardware the usb connection shows up as generic RNDIS. Can any one advise how I can share internet connection with XP?
|
Re: Phone as Modem - URGENT
Sorry, no advice with the XP. However, just grab yourself the Internet Sharing hack (search it) and bam, no pdaNet or nothing. Works like a charm right through internet sharing. Just make sure your phone is somewhere that it can breath. It gets really really hot with PAM.

Walk into a sprint (service/repair) store in uniform (or flash badge) Tell them the sentence you typed above, and tell them you need PHONE AS MODEM on your plan no matter what it cost. They'll set you up. Isn't this something your department should pay for anyway (given its for police reports?) |
Re: Phone as Modem - URGENT
Someone mentioned that it takes away from your minutes, how many minutes/kb usage does it take away??? i dont have unlimited everything, just data so i dont wanna get raped by minute usage for doing it
