Grey screen of death

Recently purchased the touch pro 2 weeks ago. After minimum usage, yesterday i wake up to see what looked like a dead phone. Apparently it was still on because you could tell that the lcd screen was on just not displaying anything. Ive tried a soft reset, taking battery out for a hour or so and trying again. I've looked around and its looking like my only answer is to reflash the rom. The only thing is that i want to back up my sms messages before i flash it. Anyone know of a way I could achieve this?
