Sprint's battery recommendation

The Sprint Connection in my email today had this recommendation:
---
Did you know your phone's lithium battery only has around 80 charges before it degrades? Keep your phone dialing longer and only charge it when the battery is almost empty.
---

Should we assume that this is the received wisdom of Sprint's phone manufacturers?

Re: Sprint's battery recommendation

i have to say wrong, that's not even 3 months of use for a $500 device? doesnt make sense. you figure charging twice a day = 40 days use, talk about burnnnnnnn

I saw the same email. Wasn't it just the other day there was a discussion here and some "expert" article said you should charge it frequently and not let it go all the way down? Don't you just love how you can find the exact opposite instructions from different sources on the net....

Re: Sprint's battery recommendation

Guys, don't be silly. It says that the battery degrades after 80 charges. That means that after 80 charges it will slowly get worse. It doesn't mean your battery is dead after 80 charges. The degradation is slow and will happen over a long time.

The real question is what regression asks. I've always heard that Lithium batteries SHOULD be charged as often as possible and not allowed to drop below a certain level. That email from Sprint threw me off a bit. Anyone know for sure?

Re: Sprint's battery recommendation

I saw that today, and I laughed. The manufacturers will tell you it's generally 500 charges (give or take) before it begins to degrade. 80 is an excessively low number, and an easy way to freak people out unnecessarily. And with how poor the battery life is on some of these phones, that's terrible publicity. In some cases this means the battery will start to degrade in less than two months? Ridiculous.

Re: Sprint's battery recommendation

Maybe Sprint said that in hopes that some people would read it and think, hey, I need to buy a battery soon, and head down to their local Sprint store and purchase one ($$$ for Sprint).

Or

Maybe I'm just being cynical

Re: Sprint's battery recommendation

I've always done a pattern similar to this. I've done this with all of the phones I've had, as well as my iPods, and I always get good battery life...

Re: Sprint's battery recommendation

I picked up another battery at Sprint store yesterday went end saying battery dies at 1-2 PM because of high call volume and emails text and ne handed me one free. This had been posted by several other OP around here just be nice. So if your worried and running low just get a spare.
