What you are referring to isn't called AGPS, but rather called Cell-ID, which is a GSM technology. Windows mobile doesn't support the cell triangulation feature for some reason, which is a problem because we can't use the My Location feature without enabling GPS first. This was an issue raised with the latest Google Latitude where WM won't update it's location if the phone is in standby or if Google Maps is closed because WM can't initialize the My Location function that relies on tower triangulation.

AGPS is specifically the technology that requires GPS satellites, but uses nearby cellphone towers to 'hint' as to it's location which helps the GPS chip lock much faster than standalone GPS.

Thanky you...you understood what i was talking about. People this isnt about obtaining fast locks or installing thios or installing that. This is about not using gps at all in any way shape or form and using cell triangaltion when your in an area where you cant physically get a gps signal.

I started on this because when im fildding around I would like gmm to update via cell triangaltion. My black berry does it on sprint but my tp wouldnt...

i referred to this as agps which confused some people...as the definition of agps is stated above..."AGPS is specifically the technology that requires GPS satellites, but uses nearby cellphone towers to 'hint' as to it's location which helps the GPS chip lock much faster than standalone GPS." One one of the spec built into agps is to fall back on to cell trianglation....So thats why I said agps. Now if Winmo doesnt support the "cell trianglation" fetaure...than that is a problem.

BTW when I do use gps i get locks 9 sats+ in less than 7 seconds.

According to recent postings, you need to switch to the telus aGPS settings as the VZ ones don't work anymore.

I haven't paid too much attention to it as the GPS in my Sprint TP on VZ service is still working just fine (I got a 10 satellite lock from inside where I work yesterday)

My true gps works fine...just like yours. but do you have those settings i want to try some things.

Once in Penn Station in NYC with my old Mogul titan, deep underground waiting for a train, I turned on google maps. To my surprise, gmaps pinpointed me on the map in penn station. Clearly, it did not use GPS. I have no been able to get the TP to do this kind of action. Was that a-GPS in action?

See thats what im talking about...Its hard to say.. cause the mougl was winmo. and my location worked (I was prettyr sure it did on my friends) with out using the gps chip, so it was using cell trianglation instead. Like i said...technially it could have been using a feature set of agps (the feature that if you cannot obtain a gps signal it defaults to cell triangaltion) it does this because of the e911 stuff.

So maybe winmo does support it for the os but other applications cant access it? maybe gmm is just jacked up on the tpro. I cant think of any other app that has that feature so its kinda hard to test. to see if its gmm.

Maybe WM6.5 will support Cell ID...

some quick searches on google....seem to point its actually a gmm problem...but thats strange cause it works fine on a g1...but then again thats a gsm device. but it works on my berry which is also cdma.

this is annoying.

Re: aGPS...How do I know if its working?

I can't really figure out if I have aGPS or not at this point.

I know I did make some QPST changes last year some time, but I haven't changed anything in months. Last night, I flashed to Mighty 4.16 & I am getting almost instant GPS locks even inside a building.

I have a Sprint TouchPro activated on Verizon service. The phone is sitting on my desk in a cradle. I work in the second floor of a building with no windows at all & one tiny skylight that is not over me.

I started the HTC GPS tool & within less than 30 seconds had a 10 satellite lock. I know none of my standalone Garmin GPS units could do that, so the TP is obviously getting some extra info from some place........

My Sprint Mogul unfortunately was never able to acquire a lock using only cell towers/My Location technology.

Also to clarify, Sprint/Verizon are CDMA and don't use Cell-ID but another technology, I believe it is that technology that WM/GMM is unable to support. If you are on a GSM network CellID may still works for WM, perhaps a Fuze user can clarify. The API for us CDMA devices doesn't allow WM/GMM to access the CDMA CellID equivalent on our phones.

//I found the link where I got this information from

Specifically this quote
"Some devices, particularly Windows Mobile devices, do not have the the proper API enabled to allow for cell ID location detection. "

Also the G1 is an Android phone and not actually Windows Mobile. Android was likely built with the API to support CellID and its sister technologies.

well then that makes sense...and as far as the g1 goes...its a gsm phone on top of that

Re: aGPS...How do I know if its working?

I have never been able to see any effect from aGPS (or cell triangulation, but I don't think that works at all on the TP) set on or off. Radio / ROM don't make a bit of difference. I work in a building with very few windows and when I am in certain areas there is no way I can get a lock. But, my junky BB Curve (sprint service) gets locks nearly instantly.

I've tried Sprint's agps settings, only to find them locked down to Sprint phones (or phones with Sprint service at least :DD)
Also tried Verizons from the aGPS provisioning cab, etc etc...

jmorton, I'm curious what your gpsone / registry settings are. Mine are set as in the CAB:
HKLM\Software\HTC\SUPL AGPS
<parm name="ServerIP" datatype="string" value="66.174.95.132"/>
<parm name="ServerPort" datatype="integer" value="8888"/>
<parm name="GPSMode" datatype="integer" value="4"/>

I know I'm missing something... does anyone have working aGPS settings for TP on Verizon? I've read that the Telus canada servers might be an option, but I wanted to see if anyone here was using them.

Overall, the GPS works great on my phone (slight lag) and decent locks if I am outside.

I did have some crazy incident last week (while travelling and actually needed it!!!!) where the GPS couldn't get more than 2 sats... quickgps and booting didn't do a darn thing... then 20 minutes later it worked fine, but for this I have 0 explanation... even the sky was clear. I had to power up my laptop and bust out the USB GPS adapter to get where I needed to.

If anyone does have an answer for this, please let me know. For some reason I can't seem to let this go as this crappy Sprint BB Curve can get GPS locks I can only dream of.

well thats what i have in pst and my registry. i just went in the bathroom no windows...shut the door and got a lock in under 10 seconds.....my garmin doesnt do that...so im assuming it must be working in some capacity.
