Backlight off/ Programs still running?

I just flashed to the stock Sprint MR to fix the GPS issue, and now my programs no longer stay open in the background when I turn the screen off. It always worked with the original stock rom and also with mighty 4.16. Is there a reg edit to fix this? I've searched for an hour and can't seem to find what I need. I listen to streaming radio on thestreamcenter.com quite often, so I turn the screen off to save battery of course. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
