Also, it is really, really slow... any way to speed it up?
No it takes over as if you logged in from the desktop. The speed is greatly influenced by your signal strength and connection speed
It works pretty well if your patient. I use it to set my media center recordings and show people pics from my library

Just a thought on the taking over the pc part. Depending on what you want to do you can set it up to route audio to the desktop Ie use your TP as a media player remote..... Its under options resource tab . Change remote desktop sound to play on remote desktop.

Re: Easy Step by step for noobs like me. Remote Desktop

I apologize...I feel like I followed your directions exactly and yet I can't seem to access my computer. While trying to connect on TP I get the following message...

Cannot connect. Likely reasons are:
1. The remote computer is not set up for this.
2. Reached maximum number of connections.
3. A network error occurred while connecting.

Any ideas? the computer is setup to allow remote access.

There is a way to prevent remote desktop from taking over the PC. I used it regularly. You need to get a hacked version of RDP on the host computer. Try googling "concurrent RDP hack". You'll need a different hacked version of RDP depending on the version of windows you're running (XP/Vista 32/64 bit).

First Are you using XP home? It doesn't have remote desktop in it.
second is your desktop on or hibernating?
Do you have a user name and password set up on your desktop? You must have a password.
Let me know and good luck!
