Activesync Automatically Loading?

Is there a way from keeping Activesync from constantly loading itself in the back ground? I still want to be able to use it to sync email and calendar. Whenever I close the app, an hour or so later it will open itself up again and run in the back ground. Is there a short cut or reg entry I can edit so I can do syncs manually? I've even tried editing the days and peek times with no luck.
