File Sharing on the TP?

Is there a way to allow file sharing on the TP? I know with other computers that are on the same network you can set them up to share certain folders. The reason I'm asking is because if I download something for the phone on my laptop is there a way on the phone I can navigate to it through my wireless network and copy the app to my phone? This would eliminate the need for the cable... I only back up with Activesync maybe once a week and typically download new apps daily to fool around. I would rather download them to a shared folder and be able to pluck them off with the TP...

That would be a nice feature too. I rely on e-mailing files to myself and uploading stuff to my FTP and using Resco FTP explorer to retrieve/upload stuff. Sucks for larger files since it can take a bit to upload hahah.

It seems feasible... Not sure if there is a 3rd party app out there or not?

Using Wifi, If you already have your pc networked, what I do is open PIE and enter in the address bar "\\(computter name)" without the " and it will prompt you with the name/password of the pc...if you have no password word like I do just users, enter the user name and hit ok...and you are in.

Yea, that's what I do also.

Got IN! I am now setting up the folders I want to be able to view on the TP. My only question is that when I try and navigate back up a level I get a connection error. The only way to go back up is to start IE and start all over. Are you experiencing this as well? Is there some settings I should be adjusting?

Re: File Sharing on the TP?

yup that is one problem when using PIE and not a true filesharing program, if you dont close PIE, when you need to go back just close the "file explore" and just scroll down the history in the PIE and you are back in.

IF you get pretty good at it...it is not a big PITA as it sounds....I do it in a heart beat.

If your laptop is bluetooth enabled all you have to do is pair the phone and laptop then send files over bluetooth. No need to active/sync or otherwise.. just right click on file on either pc or phone and choose send via bluetooth. Simple and quick! Works the same as sharing files from phone to phone via bluetooth send.

Also check out the bluetooth file sharing program on the phone. I haven't used it since the above method is simple and straightforward.

Can can always d/l a 3rd party like "TotalCommander" (freeware) then it will let you be logged in and go back and forth dir wise within the shared pc, with no problems if being disconnected when navigating.

this is kinda sticky subject on ppcgeeks isn't it. people usually get band for talking about file sharing.

MochaFTP is the best solution to me. turns your phone into an FTP server. that way u can go to your phones ip address using ftp...and drag and drop anything from your pc to your phone, and vice versa. also a good way to share cab files etc. with your cousin's and stuff that also have a wm phone. just ftp the files right from your phone.

reminds me of a wireless activesync connection that can be accessed by virtually anybody.

I also believe MochaFTP is now freeware. It's one of the 'must have' applications in my opinion.

P2P (BitTorrent, LimeWire, etc..) and home network file sharing are different types of file sharing.

The OP is talking about ways to get files on his phone (i.e, technical methods). The bannination topics here usually revolve around people asking for cracked versions of pay software.

In summary, two completely different animals.

Have been using Total Commander and have no complaints... Well the only problem I see is that TC took the default for zip files... Anyway to change it back?

Search around for "Network Plugin" cab. It will allow you to map folders on your PC to your phone, allowing you to view them in File Explorer as folders. This works well with wifi connection...or even VPN connections if you have them setup. It will even work with Hamachi, I believe. I use it all the time to copy and stream files from my PC.

Once you find, install it, and reboot your phone...it will appear under settings >> connections.

If you cant find it, let me know and I will post it.

If I am reading your problem right, why dont you just use Remote Desktop that came with the Touch Pro? Thats how I get into my home computer from work.
