Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
Been using my sprint TP for a month now and everything is pretty good except evdo throughput speeds are less than stellar compared to my mogul.
same location, same bandwidth testing via tethering, mogul used to get 1500-2000kbps down and 400 up. with the Touch Pro i can't seem to ever exceed 1100-1200kbps down and 400 up. can anyone else with both phones comment? thanks! in bayarea california. |
Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
I can confirm this. Haven't broken 1100 down or 300 up on the TP, but my Mogul was hitting 1300 down and always over 400 up. Im near Seattle.

Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
Anyone tried editing the max connections settings? What about TCP window size?
|
Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
I've messed with max connections when im in the opera;config, i was under the impression that it only changed the max connections as per max tabs, so i always set those up the same, no problem there with 10 tabs 10 max connections

Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
Are you guys on stock? Using the same program? Maybe in the EPST.... this concerns me....
|
Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
I have exceeded 1500 a couple times driving around Michigan. What concerns me right now, is that while streaming music/video, or often times while downloading larger files - the EVDO kicks out and I get 1X service until I stop the download/stream etc. and let the connection idle for a bit. Anybody else experience that?

Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
You maybe receiving a text or something...
|
Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
i also have been kicked off evdo once in a while say streaming youtube and it goes to 1x and stays 1x until i restart.
yes, stock sprint rom, i use speedtest.net and speakeasy in the evening hours atleast a dozen times on different nights in the same location. It is troubling to think with a newer device and faster processor, that sprint is limiting throughput on TP but not Moguls?? I've since sold my mogul so i can do back to back testing. I'd say on average, im down a good 600kbps compared to my mogul's speed tests. |
Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
This was my tethered result from home, with my crappy 1 bar of coverage ;)
http://www.speedtest.net/result/396752096.png I have no idea why it thought I was in Kansas. |

Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
I've noticed the same thing, but don't think they're throttling as I've had it happen before on my 6700 and 6800. You don't have to reboot the phone either, just start a call which will force it to switch to 1X and then back to EVDO once the call is released.
It happens quite a bit with the stock Sprint radio firmware which seems to max out at around 1200kbps download speed, but less often with the Telus which I'm seeing 1500kbps+ with. |
Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
I have a question kinda relating to the topic. When i first got my TP, i was looking around in the settings (##778#) and noticed the evdo rev A said ENABLE. I remember quite a while back, there was a discussion about if ENABLE meant revA was disabled, and DISABLE meant revA was enabled. Can someone refresh my memory on which it should be? My speeds are so all over the place, i cant tell if revA is enabled or not. Thanks and sorry for the n00b question.

Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
It used to be if it said disabled, it was enabled. Kind of backwards. Also this was on the touch and mogul and I don't know if the touch pro is different. I also thought that evdo was enabled by default. speeds have been wacky lately. this morning 750 kbps, two hours ago barely could break 200 kbps. now its back up to 800 kbps. very strange indeed.

Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
I've also had the random switching to 1X. I'm on stock everything and this phone is really starting to work my nerves.

Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
Just a thought for yall....
When I first got my TP I was playing with it. (After a hard reset) And I noticed under settings there was "Update PRL". When I touched that, it said there was an update for the PRL and I downloaded it and have had none of these problems. PRL currently is 60750 Has anyone tried that out? And here are my results from Speedtest. I remember reading somewhere that you know you have Rev. A by your upload speed. Does this look right? http://www.speedtest.net/result/398088949.png |
Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
I am perturbed that my slingplayer performance is unacceptable just like my old dinosaur Treo 700w and the framerate is very low (1 to 15 fps), even when outside walking the dog around the neighborhood. Sometimes it is good.
Sling over wifi in the house and it works great. Is the EVDO rev-A signal that weak? I thought it was supposed to be faster than the spec from over 3 years ago. Sling to work computer and it is flawless at 800 to 1100 kpbs with average framerate 25 fps so upload bandwidth is not the issue. Yes the EVDO indicator is on mostly and yes sometimes it drops to 1x for no reason whatsoever when using sling, inthernet or RPC app. |
Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
Well i ran some tests on http://performance.toast.net and i think ENABLE means it is enabled. When i ran an upload test with the setting DISABLE i got 130kbps and with it on ENABLE i got 700kbps. Probably not super accurate, but enough of a difference to see which is faster :)

Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
PRL is 60614
Rom date Sept/12/2008 Tried again and it looked like it was doing something, but now says no PRL update is available. |

(This may not even be it, but is worth a shot. :) Changing my PRL helped out a lot on my Touch when I was using it!) |
Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
Mine is 60750 also, and all is well here. Rom date Nov 11 2008
|
Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
mine is 60750 having the same issue
|
Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
Yes, still stuck on 60614
|
Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
Huh...well it looks like it may not help out anyway, but if you look around, there is a thread somewhere on manually updating your PRL.
Perhaps you could soft reset, check to see if that applies an update, and try again with the update if nothing happened. Otherwise, just watch and wait for one of the geniuses to pop in this thread. :) |
Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
The PRL does nothing for your EVDO speeds, only which towers you can connect to when roaming. For those wanting to manually update the PRL look here: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...ight=prl+60750 and here: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...ight=prl+60650
You will need your MSL to do the manual update or you can call Sprint (*2) and have your account flagged for an update. |
Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
That is more of what I was getting at. I had an issue with my Touch where it would switch btw 1X and EVDO all the time and changing the PRL fixed that, so I was hoping maybe it would help with that issue in this thread. :)

Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
Don't think its the PRL. Don't think any of us are roaming when we are in sprint EVDO coverage.
besides running ...50 PRL file since day one. the main point was to see who else upgraded from a mogul that had significantly higher throughput. accessing opera was much snappier in page loads than on the TP. love the TP, but i can barely see speeds over 1100kbps where my mogul would routinely be over 1600kpbs and sometimes peak 2200kbps. there has to be a reason why there is this discrepency. esp since im in the same house, same cell towers as before and only thing that changed is the phone. both are evdo rev A, stock rom, newest PRL, same software. |
Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
What is your receive window? I know by default on stock rom, it is set pretty large. Try lowering it to 37960 or so (it is over 524280 on mine by default). Too large of a rwin can causer lower throughput, especially if you have packet loss (which is a possibility over EVDO).

Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
I have to disagree with teddat on the PRL and EVDO speed link. When Rev A was first released here my Mogul never showed a difference. Three days after it was a released a friend of mine at the local store asked me how I liked it and I was like WTF. So he told me to call Sprint and get flagged for a PRL update. The Sprint techs told me the same thing that PRL was only for Roaming and not internet. But alas my local Sprint network is not Sprint but piggybacking off of Intelos so in essence roaming, so after I manually updated my PRL like magic a little EVDO symbol appears.

Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
thats cuz u were never on evdo prior to ur prl. in that case ur prl was pointing to a roaming partner of sprint. again this post is in regards to specific throughput of mogul vs. TP on rev a. and under same conditions.

Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
Funny you guys are talking about this. Lately I have noticed a pattern will flashing over and over and over. Also swapping over and over. lol. I have temp stopped my battery guide because I am doing my tests using stock rom. But recently when I had my pro swapped out and ran the stock rom for a while I noticed a few differences. One was the missed calls over the weekends. And the delayed text messages on weekends. And I even had a temp service block due to overloaded network. You know, the dreaded deep voicedmessage that says " We are temp unable to make a phone call" well its goes something like that. I really have not had these issues running other custom roms.Well, its just a observation.

Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
For those of you with Slower internet than previour phones, Like the Mogul. The problem is most likely your HA setting. Especially if you are in a different area than your phone number is. Now, You could change it to match your mogul... But the best one I have found is 255.255.255.255. That setting allows your phone to connect to the closest HA, and therefore gives you the fastest speed... Most of the time anyway.
To edit it, Hit ##PST# (thats ##778#) from the phone, then click EDIT. Then enter your MSL. Then hit the "View info" (Left soft key). Select "M.IP Customer Profile1". Select "Primary HA address" and hold it till it says edit, then click edit. Then put in 255.255.255.255. My secondary is 68.28.185.76. It will connect using that one if te other one doesn't work. I believe the secondary one I have is a Kansas City HA. After your done, select Menu, then ok. the phone will soft-reset, and you should get a good speed. Even when you travel. |

Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
You guys are lucky. I'm in CO Springs, and the highest speed I've ever seen was about 360Kbits, and at home with full bars and the Evdo icon I get about 160Kbits. This is all according to the DSL Reports Mobile Speed Test. I can't wait to try it out of state.

Re: Sprint Throttling evdo on touch pro
I'm in NYC, just did a speed test on speakeasy.net while tethered, speed was 2327 mbps download and upload was 666kbps. Seems faster than when I had my Treo 800w tethered! :D
