OP are you using that gray mini usb charger that sprint sells? I have realized that charger won't even charge my pro, just keep it charged to receive texts. I have a tom tom and I have to use that car charger to charge my pro but it works very well. I usually talk and use the phone at the same time its plugged up.

I wonder if there's a 3rd party battery replacement that will help with any known issues people are experiencing???

I'm not sure if car chargers are different, but the HTC charger has an output of 1A. This is on my HTC Touch Pro min usb charger as well as my HTC Titan mini usb charger.

I believe the car chargers output at 1A as well, but the power output may not be steady depending on the car and the car's battery.

the charger could be arcing off of something in the phone but wouldnt make sence unless your charger didnt have a fuse in it.
