All sprint coverage on Maui is EVDO, 1x is when it roams on Verizon. You must have been hitting a cell site from the big island as the Crater has a line of site north side of that island.

The reception was just fine except for some of the more remote parts of the Road to Hana. GPS was a life-saver finding all of our destinations (not that there is THAT many roads!).
